How can I convert a WAV file to an MP3 file while maintaining the same duration?

I'm trying to create some MP3 loops for use with a Swift Generator site. Cool Edit 2000 produces great sounding MP3 files from WAV files at low bit rates, but does not preserve the duration of the original WAV file.... it adds a small silent section to the beginning and end of the MP3 loop. How can I trim off these silent sections so the sound loops properly.

Any help much appreciated.

Can't you just open the MP3 up in CoolEdit2000 and truncate the waveform?

Trimming the MP3 in Cool Edit 2000 doesn't work unfortunately - the new MP3 file is still contains the unwanted silence.

The audiowriter software doesn't let me load in MP3 files to edit.

I've also checked out some software called mp3Trim, but resulting "trimmed" files still contain the rogue silence bit at the beginning.

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Then change the start and stop points.
Find the silent part at the beginning and move the start point forward a bit till it is right on target.
Do the same for the end.

Have you used the winamp plug-in that lets you make *.wav to *.mp3 (s).
