'tell target' with sound MCs....?

I'm trying to add variance to a soundtrack by breaking up segments of it in seperate MC files. I want two have two instances of the same MC file play, but starting on different frames, so that I can pan them, and have a slight offset.

This works great with visual files, but somehow doesn't work with sound files. I have them set to 'event' in the MC itself.

Is there an easy (Flash 4) way to do this, or only fancy Flash 5 coding options?
