I've been doing the in-home business thing for almost two years now. It’s had its ups and downs, but I feel like I've finally got a handle on the trade and I was making a steady income.

Then I get a job offer from a big corporation. The job called for an "Interface Designer". I would not be doing any programming at all. What I would be doing is designing interfaces for online applications, running them through usability tests, and then eventually sending them to the developers of the company.

It’s pretty advanced as well. One application they were showing me deals with loans for big businesses. A company fills it out and loan companies will make offers based on the submitted information. Currently the thing is 26 screens and takes over an hour to fill out. Definitely more in-depth stuff than I'm used to.

I went in. They interviewed me. One of the questions they asked was what do I foresee my starting salary being. I quoted twice my current annual income plus benefits.

They called me the next day and said that I got the job. No pride here. I start Monday.

Forget about the money, this job will give me a ton of experience. Meanwhile, my wife and some guys I've been contracting can keep the business at home running. If it all works out, then I would have tripled my income. But this is all in a perfect world. We'll see what happens.

I’m not sure about the rest of the countries out there, but benefits in America are really expensive if you’re self-employed. Now they will just be part of my job.

Just posting this to share the news and say when that great job offer comes through, you take it.

Hey man you're, like, a sell out. That's not groovy. The Man, like, owns you. You've lost your, like, freedom - the freedom to be broke and let that factor control everything in your life.

    But seriously, congratulations.

(In case anyone doesn't know what a sell out is: a sell-out is someone who works in Web design and actually earns a decent living.)

Hey, that's great. Congratulations. Moving that far ahead, in this economy, with .com salaries declining deserves it's own kudos.

Maybe things are turning? I know several people who are swamped with work, where 5 months ago they were counting pennies.

Congratulations! I've been in business five years myself and you always have to take care of business first. Part of that process is not passing up really good opportunities.

    good luck!

    nice one Scott,

you've got the money and the benefits and you're gonna be getting the experience but what are you gonna miss?

    Starting work at midday?

    Time with the family?

    Flexible holidays

Not having to deal with project managers who couldn't manage a bun fight in a bakery.

ha ha, anyway, good luck mate, I too am a sell out but I still retain a little freelance work on the side but not nearly as much as tripling my salary.
