    ..and others experts.

I have about 5 servers that I want to back up to the hard drive of one of my other servers.

I've tried the Backup program in System Tools, but it is inefficient. If the server is not logged on...or the netword drives password is not entered upon startup...I'm out of luck.

What is the best way to perform backups to a backup server?

How do small to mid size companies usually do this?

    Thanks in advance,
    Clif

Have an HP Colorado 14gb one...but the software that came with it didn't support Windows 2000.

Also, how do you back up from multiple servers to a single tape drive cleanly?

Ooh, i set up exaclty the same thing a couple of years back...if i remember rightly, the documentation is crap!
    Good luck...

The online help thing has that sort of info, and you could definitely back up more than one machine at once...

as long as you're not backing up active SQL databases - detach, export the databases at an idle time to create a snapshot, or use a backup program specifically for SQL with the right kind of SQL "hooks" - then I'd suggest using PowerQuest's EasyRestore, or oddly enough, the Deploy Center - remote server backups and deployment... love it - to facilitate most of my server needs.

other past programs I've used in conjunction with tape backups, especially DDS, I'd suggest not using MS Backup, but using ARCServe is highly recommended. Veritas is also high on my list... but can be a pain backing up your IIS/SQL metadata.

just don't use ARCServe with OnStream products... bad combo.
