Yes we can
for making the game a more valuable subgame inside your (rpg like) page,i´d turn it into a quest game, give an objective and a story.
quite simple to achieve actually, let´s say the ninja girls grandma has birthday soon, ninja girl thinks about some flowers would be a good present,so she starts to plant some nice flowers (already implemented in your game),the flowers grow nicely and right on the day of grandma´s birthday, suddenly dwarfish cyclops enter the garden to steal the beautiful plants.you have a timer of one minute, the cyclops always try to get close to the plants, each time they are over one of them, the flower dies a little.
once all are gone, you loose.if you rescue some of the flowers, you win.
then you can bring them to your grandma and get something for it (like a new ninja sword,as your grandma is also a ninja,of course).
still, you have to watch out while bringing her the flowers,as the big bad wolf awaits on the way,but that´s a different story..
hm,you see,i´m bored..
will go work on major phreax some more..

ok, the game will be ready in 10 years ^^
what you are saying is not difficult to code; the annoying thing now is the graphics creation, and also events handler (the story you just world is an event).
BUT, as i said that cyclop game inspired me, so i have now some kind of story around it ^^ so it will have an objective, of course. here' it's just for fun (though it can be more complete, like extra lives, new abilities)
NOW
is a RPG in flash valuable? in mean, it's ssssoooo long to program one from the begining, and i just realise that my cyclop game is so short but so addictive... (maybe ^^)
what i mean: is a real RPG in flash worth it? maybe people are looking for flash arcade games, not in-depth games... so they will play it 5 minutes, say it's wonderful, but nothing more...
doing a mini-game like that cyclop is very entertaining (i had a lot of fun doing it during the evening), but an entire RPG, mhhhh...
-
Yes we can
as i said,i was bored and when i have nothing to do,i get lots of ideas for things to do all the time..
to implement what i said, you wouldn´t have much to do:
tell the story with that textoxes (with the character images next to them) you used in one of your last demos, the flowers are there already, give the cyclops the code to move towards them, and away for some seconds once they are hit by the players sword, besides that, keep the game as it is,that´s it.
if i got you right, your game/page shouldn´t be a huge rpg with endless story etc. but instead lots of mini quests and games sticked together in a small world in which you can run around.
(which i think is the ideal "rpgish" solution for web games,as the player can play one mini game, quit the page, come back sometime later and play another one without loosing anything of the story/game progress.having several minigames rocks, even more if you get something little for solving one which you can then use in other minigames or just while you wander around (you could just save that using shared objects).
you could for example also add an arcade where you can then play some other games (like your omega bird) on one of the arcade machines, besides the fact that its more fun the more mini games you have implemented, you could also use different graphic styles for games played on the arcade machines in the arcade.
but i get your point about rpg complexity in general and how much sense it makes for a (flash)web game:
as you said rpgs take a long time to create (longer than any other game type if it should be a good one),on the other side, web (flash) game players normally pass by on a site, see a game which seems interesting, test it,play it for some minutes and come back if they liked it,but usually they don´t spend several hours on that page,so you´re right that full fledged rpgs make few sense as online only game.at the company i worked last for (i won´t tell the name but its a very well known big flash company),they worked ages on one mammutsize rpg game and though they had already put over a year effort into it at that time, not even half of the game was playable.
that was the first time when i changed my mind about the "big rpgs" every developer seems to suffer for.
since then i think as you, that smaller games are much more suitable for the web.its a difficult thing to get something with few game elements addicting or even outstanding, but its at the same time pretty sure that people will at least play it half as long as the time you put into creating it.(i´m trying to create major phreax with that in mind
added: though that is pretty difficult, each time i don´t have anything to do,i get so many ideas i could add to the game... )

lots of mini quests and games sticked together in a small world in which you can run around
exactly what i'm trying to produce ^^ and that's a wonderful idea!
of course the save and load feature is on the way to be included. and quests can be added easily when the world will be graphically finished, and areas "logically" put in place.
about your arcade idea, mmmhhh, i had that in mind (since my very old rocky experience); i tried to import the bubble bobble game (using load movie) but the keys weren't working... note; i never put _root.something in my games, but _parent.something, which seems logical if we plan to load it some day).
in other words: my project is very interesting, and as i said, i can distribute freely some fla of it if you want to add your min-game.

Yes we can
we can simply fix that loading external swf issue, just let me have a look at the code once thew page is up for that one.
i´m now full (free) time working on major phreax, after that i´ll have plenty time to work on other (smaller) games

I'm feeling supersonic
Very nice Marmotte, you've been busy I can see! As always, very neat and intuitive and a lot more content on your site since the last time I was here (several months ago). It's always a pleasure to try out your stuff.

i'm sure the problem is so easy to be solved; in fact in tried to load an external game just to see how it looked. some keys were responding (arrows), but some don't (ctrl for example), although the code for the key assignation was the same for all keys.
btw i didn't try to correct the problem, as i said it was just to see how a game integration looked like.
thanks for your interest anyway ^^
kdsh7
busy, yes ^^
i'm now adding several examples of my graphic / design creations (i'll scan several pages of my manga drawings also). since my multimedia/designer school will be finished in a half year, i'll have to find a real job; so my little web site will not be exclusively flash game based, but also a portofolio. of course i'm still motivated to produce mini-games during my free time ^^
-
Yes we can
i think you won´t have too much problems getting a job
as i said, let´s talk about your website thing after major phreax, then i can devote much more time to other free time stuff
i made game loaded into other swfs several times and never had problems with controls or anything else,so i´m sure we´ll get around that one

Hey marmotte! long been a while since I have posted... Anyways, I decided to post my thoughts about how this is all going.
Um, I love the new game! It is really fun and the graphics are great, and of course I have not run across ANY bugs or problems. I like the changes to your website. I also have been thinking more about Flash RPGs ( I just bought ZELDA A LINK TO THE PAST for GBA, and it is absolutely great! ). My conclusion is that I, personaly, would not want to sit in from of my computer go to a website and play a little rpg on a little screen.
I think what you are thinking about (maybe already done) for you game is good. Making it a little/medium/large interactive world that has a whole bunch of minigames and little quests would be GREAT fun.
As for you game, I only have two comments/requests: 1) bring the cows back (hehe) and, 2) make sure to have Rocky as a character ( i love that racoon ). And good luck.
As for me, I am moving into the programing side of things. As opposed to sites and graphics along with coding, I am trying to move into just programing ( sure i will do graphics if i must ). My first step towards this is my current game. Remember the ChuChu Rocket style puzzle game I had done before? Well it is coming back! with a whole new attitude!!! I can't wait untill it is done. It will have full playbility, full graphics, and just be awesome. I am only doing the programing while Chris Hildenbrand ( i hope I got the last name right, I don't have it in front of me right now ) from Cator.de making graphics for me!
All you get at the moment is my signature.

hello d3s_inc!
i'm glad to hear you are on the road again, i'm waiting to play with your chu-chu new style beat alpha remix ^^
about your requests:
no problem. absolutely no problem. they are here, offline ^^
make sure to have Rocky as a character
maybe you wasn't here, i posted a very short preview of my RPG, you can switch between characters while playing (rocky is of course one of the main characters, fully playable) > what i mean, the engine of changing characters dynamically during the game is already finished ^^
tom
i think you won´t have too much problems getting a job
well, i hope so ^^. thanks.
mini-games
if you have ideas about interesting mini-games that fit the little world of rocky and his friends, don't hesitate to post!
thanks

I remember saying I would do graphics such as putting houses together. I don't mind doing the tedious work. Actually, I would consider it fun.
So what happened to that deal, marmotte?

you are right virgo...
ok, i'll collect some house's graphics (i mean, interiors), so that you can do a test. do you have photoshop?
and when you'll finish the first house interior, i'll see what is your ability to do it...
i'll add the outline effect after, so always separate all the elements (layer).
are you still ready for it? ^^
i also posted several posts above that i'm open to any idea about mini-games integration (concept...etc)
-
Neoteric
maybe if you make (or rip) some sprites I can make a bomberman for you're website. as soon as I'm finished it though.
-
DOT-INVADER
it might be a good idea...
by changing a little bit the concept, adding something new, it can be very interesting!
thanks.
but i was more thinking about: give me some ideas, and i'll try to code it. i don't want to bother you all and create games for me.
btw, your bomberman is tile based?
i can add some kind of bomberman-style area, or some bomberman-like tournament in my game, why not ^^
-
Neoteric
yeah it's tilebased: http://www.lukstr.no-ip.com/flash/bomberman.htm
I can change the grapics if you want, anything is possible really. I still have to get enemies implemented, but powerups are in there too, just don't show up often.
-
DOT-INVADER
i see...
what i also meant earlier;
including a bomberman-like game, but without the bombs, something else in accordance to the game, and some kind of goal: why such a mini-game here, etc...
for the moment i have the cyclop madness to be included, with several more features, for example ^^
-

yep, marmotte, I have photoshop. And I'm up to it.
