one thing i noticed in a similar test is that wrapped scrolling images are much faster than splitting it up into several smaller images at different depths.
erixon can I ask what method you used for the wrapped scrolling background? mine uses a mask over a bitmap fill that is 2x the stage size, and it seems amazingly fast.

Its just a 640x480 image added 4 times, that should be little overhead I think, in bitmap fill there is logic for the polygon and stuff, but if you repeat small image, it should be useful.

I specially like the the fact that it never fills RAM or CPU even when it constantly creates new flowers.
