    The Amazing Disappearing Hard Drive.

So the past two days I'll go to access my secondary HD and its just not there. I'll restart and it will come back but its annoying and if im actually using it and it disappears its going to suck. My very limited knowledge would lead me to believe that most likely my mobo is going out or the sata cord is going out on me. Any other ideas why it might do that?

Wiggle all the cables, unplug them and plug them in a few times to clean the contacts.

Take notice on your next boot whether or not the BIOS actually sees it. That's where I'd start in on making sure that the problem isn't motherboard and/or connection based first.

Be sure to backup your data as a safety measure. I still remember the day at work where I lost 3 years of graphic design work because my hard drive fried. Still makes me sad thinking about it.

Another issue could be the power supply, but if its been working fine, then maybe not. I get a lot of electrical storms in my area so I've fried quite a few PSUs.

I had an intermittent issue with a hard drive once similar to yours, turned out to be the RAM i think, i removed each ram stick one at a time rebooting between, then put them back one at a time rebooting between and it cleared it up???? one of the sticks must of messed up and would't clear itself i expect, or it was just coincedental that i was messing with the RAM when the issue solved itself... who knows :P
and in a blink of an eye...

If you still haven't sorted it out, the easiest way to get your hard drive to show up if it keeps going is to do 'Scan for hardware changes'. Chances are it will show up, and you can keep doing this for the time being - saves restarting!

Back up as soon as possible!

it disapeared and i scanned for hardware changes. it found it. does that mean its software or could it still be a tricky connection? either way im going to sacrifice a grey cat in honor of the_xell.

The drive itself is effed. Back it up... do a full format then test it with what ever drive testing tools you can get your grubby little mits on!

so... i hate those easy release HD enclosures. The HD that was failing was in one. In an attempt to check all cables i found that the enclosure itself was hot. the HD was scorching hot. anyways i took it out and let it cool to room temp. Havent had a problem since.

Its still going to get super hot again.

Put it in the path of inward airflow into your computer, see picture.

right now its being suspended in front of a big opening where all the air would get sucked through. it cant get as hot as it was before. it was in this plastic case that was supposed to have a fan running but apparently it was just being a little microwave.
