My grandparents had a cocker spaniel.. Lovely dogs.. but the tend to have a lot of problems with their ears... if you do get one it's a good idea to get some advice from your vet on how to look after them..

Whilst the breed has a relatively long lifespan, they are prone to many eye problems and indeed, blindness can set in from the age of 10. The long drop ears predispose the breed to many infections and, therefore, regular checking and cleaning is a must.

lots of info online about common ailments of different breeds actually. there is a variety mentioned for cocker spaniels, but eyes and ears seem to come up the most.

omg I totally forgot about the ear problems.
It's gets moist under there so if not cleaned regulary their entire ear can itch like crazy causing them to scratch like crazy. All those germs from the foot create an infection that drives the poor dog nuts and can really smell bad. I would get in there and scratch for him so that he wouldnt make it worse.
