Odd question - Looking For Crappy Websites

I'm trying to find really really crappy yet simple websites that I can redo for people... the premise of my idea is really just to make new websites, show them to the webmasters, if they like they can keep, free of charge... Problem is, finding crappy websites is harder than I imagined, at least when looking for them. I trying to find mainly sites that are professional on some level, either someone's portfolio, maybe a town website, or a small company... While I would like to make dynamic websites easily updateable for these people I am looking for more static websites that wont be changing too often. Anyone got any tips on where I can find these crappy sites or is this a lost cause?

you might use dmoz to limit shady businesses from your search. then, you could look at certain industries. car dealerships, for example, tend to have bad ones.

Often crap commercial websites are ones built personally by the owner of the business or by a relative. These can often spring ridiculous arguments such as:

My nephew/niece/son/daughter who built the site has a certificate in designing and I don't think you could do better.

The site is meant to look like that, its meant to show a personal touch. (i.e. family business)

(my personal favourite) -> It makes us look cheaper then our competitors.

even if the website was built by a third party it can still raise ridiculous arguments:

We paid good money for our website so we have to use it.

We cant afford to risk changing the site to loose existing trade we now get with the existing site.

Our clients know us by our website, they might not recognise us if we change the site.

All these arguments can be counter argued, but often you will find shear ignorance which you can not argue and win against.

look at non profit organizations. A lot of them have very bad websites. The reason is often they don't have much to spend on a site, then again that might hurt you in the end because they might like your remake but won't be able to afford it.

So you might have to start out low as far as pay and work your way up, make contacts and get referrals etc.
