...the worlds first super-uber-mega talent ??
The Beatles had 19 albums at No1 in the US, and spent a total of 132 weeks at No1. Even Elvis had 10 albums at No.1
MJ doesn't even get close. His behavioural notoriety overshadowed his musical career.

whats the best selling beatles album? what about Elvis's?
how does that compare to Thriller?
-
Not PWD
They all revolutionized their genres for several generations, and still influence to this day. Comparing them is pretty pointless.

Thriller was a hugely successful album, doubling the sales of the closest rivals with around 110 million copies sold worldwide.
Following it at around 45,000,000 sales are albums like AC/DC's 'Back in Black', Pink floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon and Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out of Hell'.
:reference:
MJ videos revolutionised music videos, that is for sure, and he was a very talented dancer and a sweet singer, but not the greatest at either, imo.
He was certainly marketed very successfully and that will go on, with sales since his death making his estate rich again.

As far market penetration and global impact, there's no comparison.
How many music videos have their own video game?
How much money did the Beatles raise for charity?

what, to the Beatles...LOL, 19 albums at No.1 compared to MJ's how many? The Beatles changed music like no other, at a time when there was no MTV and no music video.
How many music videos have their own video game?
Who cares. How does that make him a super-uber, mega talent? It just means someone decided they could make some more bucks out of the dude.
How much money did the Beatles raise for charity?
What do charitable works do to contribute to super-uber mega talent status?
I just think, when it comes to super-uber mega talent, one huge (enormous) selling album, and a bunch of great video clips on MTV doesn't make him that.
I do hope he rests in peace, and does not just become a better commodity now that he is dead.

Look, it's not a numbers game.
There's no doubt that MJ is up there with The Beatles and Elvis in terms of being influential and culture defining.
The problem is that for anyone growing up over the past 15 years, he's just known as a creep. They weren't around, or old enough to remember when he was the biggest sh*t deal on the planet, especially during a time when there were no black performers at his level.
His death is a big deal for music and the entertainment industry, but his life has tarnished his legacy. He will never be completely remembered just for his contributions.

He owned half the rights to the catalog along with Sony. Apparently, there were legal grounds on which Sony could've reclaimed his share, but they held off for fear of a PR backlash.

yes, in a roundabout way.
for tax reasons, the publishing rights were handed over to Northern Songs in early sixties. The company went public a couple of years later, with McCartney and John Lennon holding a proportion of the shares (something like 15% each).
The company was sold by the majority shareholders (not Lennon and McCartney) to ATV in the late sixties, and in the mid-eighties the ATV music catalogue was sold, with Michael jackson being the highest bidder.
McCartney still holds rights to some early songs that were never in the Northern songs catalogue.
There has been specualtion and media reporting that McCartney may get them back - http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/...5875-21013162/
...but I would wait and see on that one, the estate is sure to be very complex and many lawyers are bound to make some big bucks.

you guys are arguing over 500 million total sales versus over 750 million total sales between the two of them.
In simple terms, combine the two numbers and one person out of 6 has bought a Beatles or MJ album, if not both.
To me... that's just an insane amount of influence.

Didn't MJ own the skeleton to the real elephant man?
or was that just an urban legend...

Yeah I'm sure it's fake along with half of the screen shots posted from questions on that service. But the fact someone even thought of that idea is crazy enough.
