if viewer has no plugin how do you display html on the SAME page (without forwarding)

how do you detect flash plugin and if the user does not have it display an html coded message (with graphics, etc.)
on the SAME page, WITHOUT forwarding to a static version of page??

i would assume that this is done w/ javascrip...

ideas anyone? or tuts you can point me to?
