FK M.D.
I'm looking to get into designing a nice poster in photoshop (I have 6.0). I don't really know how to get started. I'd like to make something of high quality; someting that looks like the poster competition winners for the conference (well maybe not that good). I know this is flashkit, but if anyone knows of a good tutorial or place to start (I'm not new to photoshop, just new to making professional-looking stuff in it), I'd be much obliged. Thanks.

If you want to make it look professional I suggest you stick to something minimal. Keep plenty of free space on your poster. Too many people fall into the trap of making their work overly complicated. Try to avoid "cheesy" photoshop filters. Also try and keep your colours to a minimal. Its the little details that make a great graphic.

Lens Flare
Whatever you do, don't put a lens flare in it.

add http://www.phong.com to 'da list, and yes - no lens flares are permitted!

neptdude et al,
i loved those sites you referred me to, especially photoshopcafe. So here's my first attempt. Please criticize widely.

and i resisted the urge to lens flare. man, that was tough. what is the stigma attached to the lens flare? overuse?

is this first attempt horrible or OK? I'd appreciate any tips/suggestions. I had a lot of fun learning this stuff and would love some input to give me some direction. Thanks.

Hey,
It's ok, i wouldn't think that it would win any competitions though, good for your first try!
