Well, this is a question that was on my mind for wuite some time...
Why is the year devided into 12 monthes????
I know why 365 days, and how much is a day (full turn of earth)...

But why hours, minutes and seconds?????

the modern calender is a hotchpotch of different cultures' calenders.

for example, i heard once that there used to be thirteen months in some pagan calender, thirteen months to follow the lunar cycle. In the thirteenth month the head man was sacrificed and this is why 13 is unlucky now.. needless to say as soon as the men had their way they got rid of the thirteenth month

this was in the ozzie film, died with a felafel in his hand

    anyway, check this:

The earliest calendars must have been strongly influenced by the geographical location of the people who made them. In colder countries, the concept of the year was determined by the seasons, specifically by the end of winter. But in warmer countries, where the seasons are less pronounced, the Moon became the basic unit for time reckoning; an old Jewish book says that “the Moon was created for the counting of the days.”

Most of the oldest calendars for which we have reliable information were lunar calendars, based on the time interval from one new moon to the next—a so-called lunation. But even in a warm climate there are annual events that pay no attention to the phases of the Moon. In some areas it was a rainy season; in Egypt it was the annual flooding of the Nile River. The calendar had to account for these yearly events as well.

the way i learned it in school was that a roman ceasar(gregory?) had a ten month calendar made originaly. hence september (7) october (8) november (9) and december (10) then augustus and julius added months named after them which made it 12.

the ten month calendar was probably 365 1/4 days due to the fact that it was a solar calendar.

I read the howstuffworks site section about time - WOW

I didn't know all that! It's reallt interesting the thing about seconds - no one actually knows what the reason for the devision of 60 of minutes and hours...

I must say, they don't say enough about the jewish calander, after all we were in the first civilizations to have a calander working!

Anyway, thanks, now I understand the concept of time (62.5%)
