Thread: Isometric controls, what do you prefer?

    Hey everyone,

    Just got a simple question.. In an isometric game, which controls do you prefer??

    1) Arrow up moves to the upper left

    2) Arrow up moves to the upper right


    I believe that this is one of those things we should all do the same, to give our games a better gameplay.

    i personally prefer when the left and right arrows rotate the character, up and down arrows make him go back and forth. like in Postal.

    Wow, lovely ball physics. I like jail*****, and must have anoth poke around.

    The thing that limits me most in Flash is math knowledge, as I'm more of a scripter I'm in year 10 (we call it Form 3) and were doing ever breed of equation and inequation alive, they are all the same, just "this on has an extra bracket" ect..... Yawn.. The most useful thing we did this year was trig, though most of class slept through that.

    Yep, Maths and physics are very hard in game develloping. I'm more a programmer and designer, if I need physics, what I do in this game, I hire some good physics programmer to do that part...

    Btw, what kind of study do you do?? And what does Year 10 mean??

    why don't give the user the chance to choose?

    Like in Gold Yard ( http://www.goldyard.net/play.htm )
    where you can choose your arrow keys configuration ( settings > controls ) or alternatively use S-X-J-N which are oriented along the walking directions...

    Perhaps that's indeed the best.

    By the way, how did you finance goldyard? I don't see any advertisements exept that single banner.. Or was it just to promote your work?

    Well, I financed Gold Yard with my day-time job
    Meaning I worked all day as a graphic designer and developed Gold Yard in my spare time.
    It may sound crazy but I did it for fun, to see what were Flash limits ( and mine!) in developing a game.

    My idea is to expand it adding more rooms ( about 40 more )and selling it as a finished product to whoever is interested enough to spend a few dollars to play it.

    I've played the game a while, got until the first room after the purple key, and I must say it's very good. A great combination of good gameplay with exellent graphics!

    How long did it take to devellop??

    like I said I developed in my spare time and for some weeks, full time so it's kinda hard to figure the whole time. I'd guess something around 4 and 5 months.

    Oh, btw, did you guys see the jail***** shut down his site !
    I gotta say I kinda agree with his reasons... what do you guys think about it?

    Well.. I can imagine he quits, but sitting the whole day behind your desk is not the only way you can be a flash programmer. A programmer can be able to sport every day, as I do.

    And not all companies just do it for the money. I used to work with other artists and programmers to devellop http://www.webpeppers.nl and noone cared about their money. Even now, when they can't efford to pay me anymore, and I'm back to buisiness alone, I like to pop by, just to say hello.

    What I'm trying to say is that it ain't just about the money. Programming is about the feeling of being able to create marvellous media products. And being an artist. I don't think you can stop being an artist. I believe jail***** will return.
