Why is Dreamweaver 4 so popular? I know it tends to write better html, but I can never get it to edit a live website effectively. It won't connect to a live website as far as I can tell. How do you guys get around this hurdle?
In the past I've used Visual Interdev and Frontpage (2000 and later only) because of this. If dreamweaver really is a lot better though I'd like to use it. Any thoughts?

cheese me.
I'm too poor to have any of them, so I just like to use Notepad. (I prefer it better, too!)
I just keeps notepad and ie open and refresh
us poor people don't get all these luxuries

I know dreamweaver can connect to your ftp... but why not just have two copies, one on your hard drive, one on your server. Dreamwaver can automaticaly up your whole site.. Just a thought....

i was a die-hard frontPage fan just like you for the longest. and the same reason, too, live updates. you press save and its online. period. edit live sites on-the-fly!
but dreamweaver is just more intuitive and much better visually onscreen. and so much more options and flexibility (espcially with flash integration.) frontPage will also add alot of sloppy coding you may not want to be there. good luck using i frames with frontPage!
as for updating, i use internet explorer in ftp mode, or cuteFTP if i have to do any binary or CHMOD.
the only thing i fire up frontPage for now is passwords and permissions. i'm familiar with .htaccess, but nothing is faster than frontPage when it comes to password protecting portions of a site and setting different users permissions for various users.

Personally, I prefer to use dreamweaver to lay everything out, since it's faster that way, and then go into notepad and get rid of the "this was made by dreamweaver" and other unnecessary coding.

cheese me.
Why is Dreamweaver 4 so popular?
people tend to be lazier, or they want to finish quicker, and some can't code.
the other one I wouldn't know

there's nothign lazy about using dreaeaver, it's just moreefficient.
coding in notepad is no different to coding in the code view of dreamweaver except that you don't have colour-coding, reference resources, templating, etc etc, never mind the advantages of the design view and the site features.
there's no proprietory code in dreamweaver.
i have no problem using dreamweaver to share files from a central 'live' point.
if you don't like dreamweaver, if you can't get on with the interface or whatever fine, but there's no advantages to using notepad, i hand code all my stuff in dreamweaver or homesite, using the extra features of these programs to speed up my work.

honestly, I have attempted to use the Dreamweaver internal ftp in the past... and I don't remember it working well, if at all.
I personally use the command line FTP tool within Windows to upload my sites. Third party tools like BulletProofFTP and CuteFTP to upload your site will work as well.
now, using the WYSIWYG portion of Dreamweaver is not a "cheap" way to get things done. I personally use mostly code view, then check my layout via the layout panel. hell of a lot faster than having to open a browser each and every time I want to see if the layout works.

not to mention the colour-coding, updateable templates, site features etc etc...
i use winSCP for uploading and file management, the best 'ftp'-type app i have ever used. But i have no problem using the internal DW ftp to manage files from a central point, when working on a site with other people it's extremely useful to track changes etc.

You may try using the following in the port info window FTP Server Information like this ftp.sitename.com:7713

Dreamweaver is class! , thats why frontpage is free!
-
cheese me.
I usually have 4 windows open for this now:
Notepad
CodeGenie
IE for viewing site
IE for FTP access
-
i think it is dreamweavers extremely powerfull layout mode wich makes even the most advance layouts a snap to do, iv never seen anything like it, especially not in frontpage.
