I am pretty shure that differnt countries use differnt modes, like I think Europe is GSM, so america must be TDMA.
I think it is kinda like the PAL and NTSC for TV's

GSM is europe, asia, africa, australia etc.
there is a limited GSM networrk in the states, but it's insignificant.

if im not mistaken GSM use a small chip that u can put in your phone, so u can store your phone numbers in the phone memory as well as the chip also all your data so you can just swap phones with your mates... TDMA i don't know hehehe... i know the old CDMA where you store everything in your phone... sorry can't be of more help...

I'd thought GSM was the global standard, but apparently not.
(that link has some stuff about the differences between CD and TD)

CDMA old Concept taken over by TDMA they say its the purest and true quality but still out with that mobile configuration thingi , that they hav to burn/write the settings in the mobile , whereas GSM is good it comes out with a chip that can be inserted in any GSM mobile set . no need to right and rush for help .
in my country we hav both , that is TDMA and GSM . but people r crazy after the GSM services they r really good . go for GSM . i think they hav smart , slim and sober mobile set from different manufacturer whereas i can hardly find a reasonable set under my buying range for TDMA .
and yes i hav both technologies . TDMA and GSM
my TDMA providers here in pakistan gimme free sms service
still glad to hav GSM

what! no SIM's? wierd. So you can't swap phones and keep the same number or anything?
do we have anyone in japan or wherever using JDC? as far as I hear the technology is ****ing fantastic over there. Think i read it somewhere on these boards that the handsets are way advanced (cameras + colour screens standard ), and reception is crystal.

yeap i lived in japan before for a short while...
there are 2 types of cellphone there... the ones u can use to make national and international call (keitai) and the ones just used locally (personal handy phone)
all cellphone comes with standard internet connection... they call it imode or something like that and all the cellphone comes with 256 colors screen and camera so u can take pictures and put it in your phone or email them... they don't even need SMS anymore since the email cost are only around 10 cent or less...
hardly any of them use brands like nokia, ericsson, motorola etc... they got their own brand and most of them are f**kin lighter than those brands... oh and they change their cellphone anytime a new model come out which is every month hehehe (at least my mates there do)

No sims for TDMA , and painful to swap mobiles with that technology , one hav to goto the service provider office to run the old number settings on the new set . whereas as in GSM we hav chip called Sim which we can insert anytime any GSM mobile to talk
and we hav the same number on both but the process to put the number on different mobile on TDMA is painful .

I have two phones. one TDMA - nokia 8860 - and one GSM - nokia 8890 - and honestly, I would suggest the GSM phone.. only if you know the areas you travel to are going to be covered. There is NO GSM covered in 90% of Virginia, so, that phone doesn't even work in those areas. Then, my TDMA phone, works in more locations, but I swear, I drop more connections with that phone between cells.
They both have their pluses and negatives; however, I say get the one that works in the the majority of the places you travel. And if it's GSM, go that route if you can.
I'm still ticked off that we don't have 3G or GPRS/GRPS (I forget which) that widely used in the states... ARGH!

yeah, I think we've got a year or two (max, hopefully) before 3g is properly useable. I'm waiting for that before I get a new phone, but as I've had mine for 3 years come july, I'm getting itchy!!

honestly, Verizon has rolled out 2.5G to some areas already, 3G to some key areas. AT&T is making the jump 4th quarter of this year to 2.5G/GRPS on the coasts. However.. it's all going too slow.
<sigh> To be back in Japan...
