A flash question

Excuse my ignorance, could someone answer this please. With movies made on the recent versions of Koolmoves being flashplayer version 5, if code is edited to version 4 would older browsers still play the movie or would this cause an error or such? Thanx

Hello there,
Actionscript in KoolMoves must be written in Flash 5 syntax. If you use Flash 4 syntax, KoolMoves will produce an error message when you click the "Check syntax" button within the ActionScript editor. (Not always)

So, you cannot produce a movie with Flash 4 syntax from within KoolMoves.

Having said that, I think I am right in saying that all your movies made with KM are in swf version 5, so have to use the Flash 5 player.

If you use the KM "Save as flash movie and web page", the javascript produced will check the version of player being used within the browser, and if it is not version 5, will send the browser to the macromedia web site for an update. (I think)

If I am not right on this, I am sure someone will put me right

That answers that question. However, I asked someone to look up a website of mine on their workplace computer to check the appearance on a different size monitor and resolution. The flash menu and banners did not appear nor did any macromedia download message. The script is the KM output script (flash version 5). They use Win 2000 and have adsl connection so I would imagine they would have a recent IE browser. I have put a (get flash)download link on the page now but this is making me rethink my web designs.

Stay where you're Hilary ! That's right: KM is working only in Flash 5.
But "waytogo",why are you using Flash 4 ?

I think it's time for BOB to implement some usefull commands from Flash 6 !

I have flash 6 installed, my concern was with what other users see in place of the KM flash item on my site when (a) they don't have flash installed and (b) when they only have older versions of flash installed. One user (as mentioned before) saw nothing - I thought they'd get a message to download flashplayer or a later version.

If they hit the page from either NS (Mozilla)6 or 7 or IE and they do not have something to handle the Flash MIME type they are redirected to download the latest version of the plug-in. This is created in the HTML using the Object and embedd tags (If you want to check the code yourself you can... Simply hit view source from either NS or IE).

If they still have Flash 4 or are using QT 5 to handle SWF Mime types and refuse to upgrade they should see everything except the Actionscripts. With QT enabled to handle the Mime types they will see a huge QT symbol while the Flash loads and if may get an error if it comes across something QT does not like.

Hi Bruce,
IE 5.5 comes with Flash 5 pluging installed.
IE 6 comes with Flash 6 plugin installed.
Netscape 6.2 comes with Flash 6 plugin installed.
If that user saw nothing it's time (for him) to enter in 21th century ... ha ha

Thanks folks for your assist - Maybe the person I told to check my site may have a glitch (like I'm getting with my domain account at present). Guess she'll have to download flashplayer and try again - her workplace system is running Windows 2000 you'd think their browser would be up to date -maybe her boss is too cheap for even FREE stuff!

With IE it doesn't matter if Javascript is on or off.

The Object tag itself caries the info to upgrade the player. Now if they have active X removed from the browser for security then they will see nothing but an error along with a message that they must enable that feature.

I discovered that the person who checked my website has her work PC connect to office network server. She tried downloading flash 6 but still nothing happened - obviously needs to be downloaded on the server. This may explain why there was no macromedia download message when she viewed my site - whether that explains it or not is beyond me. KM graphics works fine for every one else - so it seems I have no worries. Though I'm still not yet into a.s. KM excells for me.
