text as button w/ mouseovers - cursor needs to be precise ?

Why is it that when I use text as a link and put a mouseover on it (ie. turns to red)... you can only see it turn to red and clickable if your cursor is directly over a letter? A way to get around the clicking is to make a same-link background image that covers the entire word right? Well that still leaves the problem of having to be precisely over a letter of the word to see a mouseover effect.

How do you guys get around this problem?

Because that's the only active area. to fix this problem, put a rectangle the size of the area you want clickable in the "hit" frame of the button
