ok im using flash 5 and photoshop to make an intro for a website. i have made graphics and material in photoshop and it is of a good quality, this quality is maintained when i import these pics into flash and appear with the same level of detail in the .fla file (im using .png file format). however, once i have exported my .fla to make the .swf file some quality is lost, when viewed with the flash 5 flash player it is still acceptable however when i view it in ie6 it looks really bad and im not happy if this is what it would look like when hosted on my site 
basically can someone explain this to me am i doing something wrong maybe or is this a problem that happens a lot???

you need to check your publishing settings. you might have the quality level set low check that. by going to file > publishing settings. i sure thats whats wrong.

ok i changed jpeg quality to 100 and also html quality to best and the results were v good thnx very much for your help on this matter! however my nice movie that was once a measly 200k has increased to a whooping 1.2 mb si i realise it comes as a trade off hopefully i can find a happy medium nb it also helps setting the ie window as close as poss to the work space size in flash (obivious i know)

Maybe you should have imported a .png, so it would be compressed inside flash to jpg, I always use that type.

which is more compressed .jpg or .png ?? i thought that .jpg was just about as compressed as you could get with quality???

PNG is not compressed. That is why it is logical choice, cause flash has it's own compression tools. If you use jpg it could get compressed twice.

i have been told by experienced flashmasters to use
.png fgor all images even if transparency isn't needed so what is smaller .png or jpeg?

In the end it's the same cause it's jpg in the swf, but if you import png you can have a transparency, which is not the case with jpg. But, because you can choose level of png compression to jpg, you can test your results in the right environment.

EDIT: i got loadsa pics in my library that i am not using anymore does this matter or is it best to delete them?
