For 4 - 5 years, I went hunting in the state gamelands outside of Harrisburg, PA and also further up north in the Leighigh Valley. I had a Fox Savage 12-gauge side-by-side which I generally used with low brass cartridges. That gun kicked butt. I really wish I still had it, but I sold it before I left the US.

We took all kinds of stuff, dove, pheasant, etc (even squirrel, when there wasn't much action), though what we really went for was grouse, but they're so quick and they stay put until you almost step on them, it's difficult to get the gun up quick enough. Crazy stuff.

The best part was that most times, we'd be camping too, so we'd clean and cook the taking of the day over a campfire, while enjoying some beer/Jack Daniels/Wild Turkey-flavored refreshments. Sometiimes even in the snow, which was a challenge.

Tell ya what though, after being out in the woods for 3-4 days, a shower was just about the best thing ever.

Look, the idea of a hunting preserve is very easy. You pay to go to a specific, private area which is stocked with the game animal of your choice. The amount of your payment determines how many of the animals you can take, then they are cleaned and prepared for you to take home and enjoy.

The animals on the preserve are generally raised by the preserve to stock their own area, so no wild animals are taken simply to fulfill the needs of hunters.

Personally, I think it's a bit if a con - I mean, if you're going to hunt, then hunt. Don't go to a set-up event area, 'cause that ain't hunting, that's just shooting with a twist. But that aside, there's many that enjoy, and if you're going to eat what you take, well going to a preserve is a personal choice matter.

(Also, it ain't cheap)

If you were to put a shotgun up the squirrel's butt and then fire, yeah, there's not much left, but if you're shooting from perhaps 30 meters, the pellets of the shot scatter (called the 'pattern') and perhaps only two or three hit the fella.

Just gotta make sure that you get 'em out when you skin 'em cause chewing on lead is over rated.
