Thread: CPU unworkable?

  1. #1
i decided to take the challenge of building my own pc, and i have fallen flat on my face when i start it up (which only happens about once in five attempts) it says my processor is 1153mhz but i have a 1800+xp (1.53) then just under the ide mastyer list etc... it says
"CPU is unworkable or has been changed recheck - CPU SOFT MENU" does this mean that the processor is faulty? and are these instances related? thanks for your time - barry
ps im taking it to the shop tomorrow

I had same thing - its because your ram isnt fast enough, either that or you havent changed the bios settings to 133/133

My AMD Athlon 1800XP would not run at 1.53Mhz only 1.15Mhz - On the Mainboard My 512DDR ram was running at 100Mhz whereas the CPU at 133Mhz... Buy faster RAM I'd suggest

no need to buy faster ram if you bought the correct type to begin with. does your board even support that processor? some do, some don't - I had to switch boards for my 1900+

make sure that your memory is running at the right mhz, 133, and that you are using the correct clock multiplier. do not up the voltage, unless you want to overclock the processor.

I don't suggest you commit to overclocking just yet.

ok my mobo definately supports my processor so thats ok,i got a abit at7 max, the "cpu changed" line? is this normal when you first start the computer? and also why you think it only starts like one in five attempts? you think my mobo is broken?

enter BIOS setup, make sure your RAM is running at a 133 speed.

you wont be able to change the multiplier or voltage anyway as it wont be unlocked.

the 1800+ athlon xp runs on a 11.5x multiplier unlocked, so what its doing is 11.5 x 100mhz fsb giving you 1150mhz, up the memory bus/front side bus to 133mhz and this will give you your 1533mhz

also the reason your comp may start or may not, could be because something is shorting it out. like a part of the case is touching the motherboard so it wont start up. try running it outside of your case and see if that fixes the problem of the comp starting up 1 in 5.

thanks guys you are a great help i am just worried that the hardware i have bought was faulty? when you start a new comp for the first time is it normal for the
"CPU is unworkable or has been changed recheck - CPU SOFT MENU"
to appear? and if it is normal when does it cease to appear anymore?
