Thread: math-based coding for dummies

  1. #1
I recently received some much-appreciated help from jobem and ahab with aspects of coding using trig.

It occured to me that there are probably lots of developers in my position, probably from non-techie backgrounds - serious mental block/gap when it comes to applied maths. Perhaps some of the moderators or anyone else could get together a tutorial/FAQ explaining this stuff from the ground up with direct relevance to Flash. I would certainly pay in cash for something like this...

I second that. Ummm, except for the paying cash bit.

One place to check might be general tutorials for writing games (usually C stuff) as the maths stays the same. But if anyone could write up a few flash tutorials for things like rotation and perspective I think they'd be appreciated.

I actually asked Mark if he would put up a math forum here at Flashkit but he thought it was too specified for a Flash board...however he did settle for a math tutorials section. I have already written two tutorials (which you can see on my site) so those will be up soon (hopefully) here at Flashkit. Also Im sure that as soon as the ball starts rolling with the math tutorials others will start to contribute. I have a whole list of things I want to write about but my free time has been cut drastically short lately...but I'll try.

Also I posted this on a different thread but here are some of my math related bookmarks:

Also check out the Math links at Were-Here for a great list put together by Richard Wright (Dickee on the boards):

Now even if I am unable to do a lot of tutorials right now I can promise quite a few within a few months...and hopefully others will too.

    Well...good luck.

Good stuff ahab. Thanks a lot.

I'd be all for a maths forum. At the moment maths stuff could go to 3D, Games or Actionscript. The latter is too busy and we'd lose stuff and 3D tends to be more orientated towards conversion from Studio Max etc, to vector graphics rather than the maths of 3D.

Maybe we can start up a maths thread in one of the existing forums and try and keep it alive?

I'm a programmer, not a designer and as such all my flash work looks terrible concentrating on programming that our designers spruce up later. I'm sure they're others in a similar boat.
