BroadBand Games NarrowBand Games
Hi there
Right now I am in the process of making games and I am really enjoying it as its new to me. I think I should have taken up with this a long time back.
ANyway I am coming across with some very new terms like BroadBand games and narrowband games. What are these games? How are they different from other games, if at all. I want to und this.
Pls explain,
thx

broadband is having more bandwidth - the user can transfer information faster than someone on.. lets say a 56k.
a broadband game could have a larger file size since the game could be downloaded much quicker, and this would let you put in more file-size increasing things - images etc.
a narrowband game would be designed to load faster for 56k'ers, and would probably have few if any images, and be more vector based to save space and download time.

so anygame can be a broadband game or a narrow band game. Is it that its just the speed at which the game gets downloaded at the users M/C?
can u pls explainin detail?
thx

unless theres specific things i dont know about, it should just be how fast the game is downloaded, narrowband would be downloaded faster (designed for slower connections), and broadband slower (for faster connections)

Yup, the terms "broadband games" and "narrowband games" are often banded about by marketing idiots who don't really know what they are talking about
Both terms reffer to the speed in which a game can download for the end user. This means a 100kb game would be considered "narrowband" when compaired next to a 1mb game, which would be considered a "broadband game".
A 56k user could still play the broadband game, it would just take a 20 minute (or so wait) for them to download it

A broadband game may have improved graphics, video sequences, improved sound. This just meens that if you were using a 56k modem it would take ages to download and thus cutting some of the sequences, sound quality etc would lead to the game being a narrowband game for people with slower connections! These options could be integrated into the same game, for example asking if the user is on a fast or slow connection and then loading swf's on the fly to the user preference. This will then mean you can run everything from the same swf and the user has a choise of whether to choose high bandwidth and wait if there on a 56k modem or get it really fast and cut out some of the quality if there on High Broadband connection!

Hmm, that might be what it means for a single player game.
In the Multiplayer world, Broadband games usually means games that require high bandwidth, these games require a faster connection that can send and receive alot of data fast, I.E. one that requires a cable line.
Narrow band is for games that require little bandwidth, something you can play with other people using a modem. These games send a small amount of data to and from the player.

in the world of flash however, "broadband game" probably means that the developer has been lazy and hasn't bothered compressing anything
