When actors could act, dancers could dance, and men were men...

    Geez..

I just watched His Girl Friday.

I tell you what..they just don't make movies like this anymore.

This movie had more dialog in one minute than most modern movies have an hour. Fast paced, witty, and just incredible acting. Had me in side splitting laughter half the time...and not one sexual joke or cuss world. Imagine that.

Just got me thinking about how hollywood lacks talent anymore. I mean you watch movies like "Singing in the Rain" where Gene Kelley does a 3 minute dance scene without cuts...and compare it to what we get today. I heard an NPR interview this week about the movie Chicago the other day. One of the guys main points was how nowadays they have to cut up dance scenes because the talent isn't there.

I say shove it..bring back fred astaire, ginger rogers, gene kelley, and the crew or REAL actors/dancers.

There stars just aren't as talented.

Don't get me wrong, you have good actors, but you go back to the golden years and you get to see what a versatile actor really is.

    Anyway..just thought I'd rant.

If you haven't seen His Girl Friday...you NEED to. It's a golden film.

Yeah..I personally enjoy Kevin Spacey. I think he is an outstanding actor. And there are a lot of good actors right now, but watching a few old movies reminds you what we're missing.

You had people that could slide into any role and amaze you.

18 My parents are old movie buffs though...so I've had a well rounded movie education.

Ed Norton rocks! I think Jim Carrey is pretty versatile as well.

Brad Pitt? Maybe. Haven't seen any of his recent films.

Like I said..there are a lot of good actors, but the talent isn't what it used to be.

Edward Norton is a top actor and a highly versatile one (American History X and Fight Club even 25thHour )

Personally what i see is more and more talented actors who dont meet the Hollywood stereorypes becoming highly bankable stars who also happen to be able to produce and write...let alone act even if they dont have perfectly white teeth, physique, shaped noises (Ed Norton, Owen Wilson, even Kevin Spacey who had been around for so long fighting to get noticed cos of his ordinary looks became a leading man).

I agree we don't see the caliber of *some* of the movies from back then when the studios dictated who became a star and who directed what - Then again you'd never see a edgy Kassavetes -style film before the 50s either. Another reason is that you don't have that good writers anymore. An actor can do so much with a script that deosnt work and these days unfortunately there's much less emphasis on the story and character development.

Today most stuff is book adaptations (its safe and lazy) though there are many notable exceptions: Tarantino, Anderson etc
The talent is still here and more across the board than before when actors nowadays will do a couple of blockbuster flicks to get the money to fund their own projects on the side. Years of independent film making has taught them that (a trend set by Eastwood too I believe) -Maguire did Spiderman and secured a part in the sequel, his salary was raised up substantially and he went on to spend it wisely: He produced Spike Lee's latest film.

In Europe independent film makers have been relying on the advertising industry mainly for money which they then throw back to their own films. Kusturica, Wenders - have all done commercials for washing machines and candy and every 5 yrs or so will complete a project such as 'Wings of Desire' which gets critical acclaim around the world and then gets ripped off by a Hollywood producer who sees it and decides to give Meg Ryan a call

Dont blame the actors or the directors - theres still lots of good stuff out there, just need to know where to look

You know that is an excellent point. I never considered that.

There are still a few talented male actors. Although, I will have to agree that it does seem that there are more females right now that are great actors.

Brad Pitt is good, as is Robert DeNiro, you can't forget Robin Williams (although he hasn't really done anything much recently).

Owen Willson in my opinon is pretty good, but his voice annoyies me .
John Starkey: So what if I have had sexual relations with Saddam.
