I was just thinking about it. I've seen some around before. Some really incredible dvd interfaces made by design firms. Anyone know of any firms that do it?

Exactly, I've been wondering that too - specifically what firms do the intros/sequences, etc., for some of the better DVD movies out there.

That site was pretty nice. I'm looking for like the super clean dvd UI's. Ones that perfectly blend with the movie. Like gone in 60 seconds. or something.

That onyro site was disappointing, such nice work, you would think they would keep up with their work, especially if some sites has since changed and images can not be found. Still great work, though. So did Kioken get bought out by them or something? Or they worked with them on a few projects?

This is an up and coming niche market. Job boards are filled with firms looking for designers with DVD authoring experience or after effects, etc. I don't think any firm exist by only making DVD UI's but many large firms employ people with those specific skills. For any designers losing a job, that would be solid fall back plan.

I plan to get the new DVD Studio Pro by Apple and learn the scripting of DVDs. As the field changes, so those our need to acquire more skills. Considering Adobe has entered with their DVD authoring software, the market will grow, but honestly, I don't see a huge field for this, maybe more in the dynamic HDTV content market.

What kind of complex programming for go into dvdui? I dont see it much. Unless you're talking about those some dvd with like build in video games and stuff.

The more you want your interface to do, the more interaction, the more coding. I'm not too familiar with it yet, but I'm sure as DVDs continue to dominate and grow in the amount of data they can hold, like with the new blue laser DVDs, there will be more you can do with them.

I work at a firm that does DVD authoring:
Digital Lagoon

We do one about every 3 weeks. Mostly training videos for manufacturers and restaurants. Before we would put them only on CD-ROM. Now we provide DVD, CD-ROM, and occasionally VHS as well.

The computer used is a MAC dual processor G4, using Apple's DVD Studio Pro.

Whether we make a DVD or not with a video we produced really depends on who the video is being distributed to and what resources they have available, right now, more opt for CD-ROM.

DVD Studio Pro is ok, but still seems a bit clunky for my tastes compared to the more mature authoring environments such as Director...

so where does your work come from, local, or all over the country? I am considering adding DVD authoring to my services, but here in Cleveland, businesses are reluctant to pay what quality work costs. For some reason $500 is a magic design fee to them. This is one of the reasons why I plan to move back to NY.

95% of the DVD work has come from existing clients, mostly in the greater Kansas City area.

One client put dvd players in all of their restaurants, so instead of delivering the training and marketing videos on VHS like the company has done for years, we deliver them on DVD. Now we just offer the DVD as an added service, and havn't really found a revinue stream just specifically for DVD.

Currently DVD is just a delivery media for us, just like VHS. Unfortutately none of our clients have wanted to invest in what DVD is really strong at, like its menu's, motion menus, interactivity, etc.

I can relate to what you are going through in Cleveland, maybe it is a Midwest thing, or more specifically a client issue, or a little of both?

Well if it is the same there, I think it may be a regional thing. I know some clients want those big things on a 1 html page budget.
