    FK's Genious Members

i see all these people posting all these questions about english so lets see if some of you brilliant people can answer a few simple ASTRONOMY questions.. Just answer what you can and lets see the various levels of intelect here at FK hehe =]

    Here we go....

    1) Explain the difference between solar time, sidereal time, and the time kept by atomic clocks.

    2) A constellation is a grouping of stars that appears near each other on the sky. Are the stars in a constellation all at the same distance from us? Explain

    3) For Each of the Following types of motion, state whether the motion is due entirely to movement of the observed object, due entirely to the Earth's (observer's) motion, and the earth's motion: annual motion of the sun: daily rising and setting of the stars: retrograde motion of a superior planet; and daily rising and setting of the sun. Briefly explain each answer.

    4) Why do we have a north pole star, but not a south pole star? Will we always have a north pole star? Explain.

    5) Consider the meridian, the imaginary north south line that passes overhead at your lacation. A star crosses it again the next night. Does the start cross the meridian at exactly the same time each night? Explain. Exactly how long is the period between crossings?

    6) How would our seasons be different if the Earth's axis were not tilted (that is, if the axis were perpendicular to the Earth's orbital plane)? What would the seasons be like if the Earth's axis were tipped 90 degrees instead of 23.5 degrees?

    7) Explain why the moon is never visible on certain nights.

    8) Explain why a solar eclipse is often followed by a lunar eclipse about two weeks later.

admit it: you typed your science homework word for word.

in case you're marveling at my wonderful powers of deduction, the "Explain." gave it away dude.

Most of these questions relate more towards the subject of relativity than astronomy.

i took astronomy in college and the questions were a lot different than this.

so damn much math (color, light...heat...not my bag)...

yeah theres alota math involved but tehre not extreamly hard equations untill you get into Newtons universal law of gravity.

And we actualy went over light, heat, and color today.

thats all on the electromagnetic spectrum

The stars do not necessarily need to be next to each other, I'm guessing that they rarely are. Take the stars of Orians belt. Nowhere near each other. They appear close to each because they angles formed by star-earth-star is relatively small. The distances between the earth and these stars are actually very different.

They always appear near each other because the revolution of the earth around the sun is very small in comparison to the distance between the earth and these stars.

with the exception of retrograde motion... (I don't know what that is) all of the above are affected by the motion of the object relative to us. These means, imagining a 'still' object in the universe, the object that we are observing has a motion relative to the 'still' object. The observer has motion relative to the earth, the earth has motion rotating around it's own axis, earth rotates along with the moon around their center of mass, the earth rotates along with the sun around their center of mass, the solar system rotates around our galaxy, the galaxy is moving through the universe...

    Like I said before, relativity.

ask uranus (no pun intended, it has it's axis somewhat perpendicular to it's rotation around the sun)

You mean the new moon? There is no light shining directly on it from the sun. You can still see it because there is a bit of light reflected off the earth, to the moon, and back to the earth.

    pretty good answers
BTW retrograde motion is when an object in orbit around the sun catches up to a slower moving object orbiting around the sun and it gives the elusion of an object stoping moving the oposite direction for a while..

Example when earth orbits the sun it orbits much faster then jupiter. Hence it is going to pass jupiter in its orbit and jupiter in our sky will apear to move eastwardly when it normaly moves westernly across our night sky.....

So my answer still works. Damn that Einstien's smart

actualy a better example of retrograde motion is say your driving down the street and theres a car ahead of u in the next lane its moveing forward right? Well when you pass that car it seems to stop and move backwards but after a while it apears to be moveing forward again....

Actually, assuming that both my car and the car in question were moving the same speed, it would seem as though I were sitting still and the other car was going backwards wouldn't it?

If the car is decellerating from a speed greater than mine to speed less then mine, then it would appear that the car was moving forward, slowed down to a stop and started moving in reverse.

But there are many other factors involved I'm guessing
