    [disc] 2d or 3d or what ?

    hi there,

ok, some of you might remember the 3d engine demo with the tanks i should a couple of days ago (BattleTanks) and i really wonder if it's worth to make a game out of it (thus spending at least 2 weeks with it) or stick it where it is and leave the engine alone ...

on the other hand it would be possible to create a completly different game using the engine (which would take even longer to complete) (some kind of moving through a building and find/collect things)

... or another quick and dirty (ok, not sooo quick (cauldron ...)) conversion of a c64 game (i won't tell you which one ), adding a few more game-modes and new gfx ...

i just can't decide which one to start with (due to the lack of free time i must pick one and not all )

    so any suggestions are welcomed

    sincereyl <olli/>

btw. i still want to explain how the fake 3d thingy works ... i just don't know when ....

Must have missed that last week, but nice work. Funnily enough I've been wondering lately why more people don't take this approach - basic Drawing API 3D engine over the PercyPea Mode7 technique. You've done it and it looks amazing. Gameplay wise as well, you've got your bases covered with a legitimate reason for having a small viewing area and one which adds loads to the atmosphere. It actually reminds me a lot of that Novalogic follow up to "Comanche" which had a tank going round a voxel landscape - the width of the strips of the ground is the reason why probably!

I can see how making a decent game using the engine (as opposed to a very pretty interactive tech demo) would take a while. A basic shooter would get boring pretty quickly and you would need some kind of twist to make interesting. Maybe a set of missions where you need to accomplish a set of objectives to create the illusion of taking part in something altogether grander. Destroy Bridge. Take out enemy tank guarding the road. Destroy watchtower. Provide cover for escaping prisoners (inside their truck)...etc

... yep that's the main problem i'm not sure if i like to spent a couple of days to go beyond the "basic shooter" stage (not yet, at least).

so i guess i will use pen & paper for the next hours and hopefully come up with an idea ...
