    [Disc]Genres

    Hey,

Just to add some more acticity here

    - What genres do you like most?
    - Why do you like that genre most?
    - What games of that genre do you play?
    - What game of that genre do you like most?
    - Why do you like that game most?

    SaphuA

Now, since most of my threats end up as spamming, I'll remove this threat as soon as it's getting over-spammed.

    - The RPG genre
    - I like playng a character to travel over the world, gain experience/power, get more different attack's, find items, complete
    quests etc. etc...
    - FFIIX, FFIX, 2Kingdoms, Diablo II, Baldurs Gate (friends house one time)
    - Defenatly the Finaly Fantasy series...
    - Finaly Fantasy is just realy what an RPG should be:
Big worlds, lotta (different) enemies, great amount of items, humor, cool attack's, nice magic attack's, Guardian Forces (in IIX) etc. etc...

if you are into RPGs, you defenitely have to adopt xenogears (PS1), it's extremely brilliant. i never played xenosaga though.

ok, i don't have a prefered genre, i think... yes, i like RPGs a lot too, i wish i had the time to play them. here's the list of my all time favorites:

    > the silent hill serie (no surprise! PS1/PS2)
    > xenogears (PS1)
    > jet set radio (dreamcast)
    > ace combat 3 (PS1. but only the jap version! the storyline/soundtrack/designs were fabulous)
    > ICO (PS2. it was great)
    > ridge racer type 4 (PS1. powerful, i liked it's universe better than gran turismo)

^ i excluded the classics here, because there are tons of them. think kid icarus, metroid, ice climber

its the same with me as with marmotte,i actualy like games with big game worlds and weeks of gameplay like rpgs but sadly i don´t have enough time to play them anymore.
Before playstation 2 times i had pretty much all consoles and played most games counted as classics nowadays but then i stopped buying consoles (no time for em thanks to my job).
Some years ago i also liked rts games,we played command and conquer for ages and even more starcraft, then the concept was copied so often that i got bored of that game type (the last one i played a bit longer was warcraft 3 because it was a bit different and had a nice storyline).
So i had some time without much playing, only played games like jet set radio (quick fun) at friends at times but then i got myself a new handy and it was coupled with a free gamecube,so i got myself some games again.

The game i play most after work right now is viewtiful joe,its just the ideal game if you have few time for a game and still want to play one or two episodes each time
For those who don´t know it:
joe watches old classic superhero movies, one time he does that with his grilfriend,a huge hand comes out of the screen and grabs his girlfriend, then he gets sucked in himself and has to rescue his girlfriend, after a while he meets captain blue, his favorite hero (a bit aged and with a fat potbelly who gives him a vwatch and teaches him superhero moves).
There are several things which are awesome in this game:
-the actual gameplay is a sidescrolling beat´em´up game,as it comes from capcom, you can do all kinds of friggin combos
-you have three superpowers when you use your vwatch: superfast speed, superslowmo and zoom.
in speemode everything moves the same speed but joe is superfast
in superslowmo everything is slow but joe moves the same speed
in zoom the scene zooms closer to joe and he does a superhero posing, weak enemies are scared and don´t move anymore(and you can do some different attacks than in normal mode).
(you can also combine those powers)

Sure, things like "bullet time" (superslowmo) and being able to move faster than the rest have been there in several games before, but viewtiful joe is a perfect example for how to combine creative new ideas and existing elements with a new twist to them to form a great game with a unique addicting feel to it:
for example in superfast and superslowmo the whole graphics look different,(for example) in superslowmo bullets have that
matrixstyle bubbletrail effect ,in superfast mode hundreds of lines pass by in the background combined with a blurry effect which underlines the feel of speed.
but its not just the graphics, the superhero moves also affect gameplay,in superfast mode you can raise platforms or extinguish fire,
in superslowmo you can lower platforms and raise the impact of all physical effects (your attacks are stronger, you can grow water drops and you can raise a small explosion into a giant one with more impact).
these features are used all over the game for some puzzles where you can´t get forward without thinking and using the right abilities in combination.
that way you don´t have the feeling of playing a "stupid" beat´em´up or jump´n´run.
besides that it has a small rpg/adventure touch as a nice storyline evolves throughout the game and you can raise your characters powers by learning new moves or collecting viewtiful points and buying new equipment and moves in the store after each level.
another nice feature is your viewtiful bar,it fills itself constantly and gets decreased each time you use one of your superhero powers.
if its full, joe has his superhero costume on and can use his powers, once its empty,he transforms back into the ordinary joe,is much weaker and the whole secene has an oldmovie effect overlayed complete with film grain, wild hair and sound.
urm yeah, the gameplay is 2d but the whole graphics are impressive cell shaded 3d with camera movement from time to time perfectly porting the comic flair =)
anyone who has a gamecube and loves good gameplay combined with great comic 3d graphics should give it a try

besides the above ones,i also loved adventure games on pc like the maniac mansion or monkey island (indy) series, too,
bad there aren´t new great games of that genre anymore.

    - What genres do you like most?

    - shoot'em up

    - Why do you like that genre most?

    - Brain dead action. Just pick up and play. Everything about a good shooter is pure impact ( I still hold Defender up as the perfect example of what a shooter should be ).

    - What games of that genre do you play?

    - Just anything. Uridium, R-Type, Defender, DropZone and it may sound big headed, but my own stuff ( During it's development phase ).

    - What game of that genre do you like most?

    - Dropzone.

    - Why do you like that game most?

    - The best version of Defender there is.

talking about "Brain dead action. Just pick up and play. Everything about a good shooter is pure impact", i played giga wing on DC today... now this is imapct and action :-)
let's say 10 millions of sprites on screen per frame and it's ok... ^_^

but hey, it's good to play more "peaceful" games sometimes too, mate

Don't get me wrong, a quick fix of bubble bobble is always nice

...but if I was on a Desert Island, I'd need a blaster.

    ^_^

    let me think:
i'm in a video game store, and i have in front of me 2 games (let's say 60 euros the single game)
    1) gigaWing (pure and instant joy, extremely fast and very enjoyable. you play 15 minutes and finish it)
    2) final fantasy (slow but extremely deep, storylined, more than 60 hours of gameplay)
^ i'm sure you would go for gigaWing, mate...

(oh, it's a good choice too)

Everytime !! ( RPG's just leave me cold I'm afraid. I do like playing the old "big" game every now and again, but it's so rare I've got the free time to waste on it )

Genre and games: RPGs (Final Fantasy) and the 'Survival Horror' stuff (Resident Evil, Silent Hill)

I like how they actually have story and gameplay. You build up your characters as you slowly unfold the story.

Nah just bored... it's vakation over here

I'm kinda shocked that the 'older' (but still young ) people don't like RPG's... Proberbly too bussy with acting like they're bussy

I think that everyone will like a good oversized RPG if they put enough time in it. You people are correct if you say that Finaly Fantasy takes too much time, that is actualy why I stopped playing those games. But if I had more time I would go for the RPG's

Yeah, and they probably don't like boobies (see Final Fantasy X2).

But seriously, despite the fact that I like RPGs, I can see why some people don't.

RPGs rewards are often the cinema or the storyline, but not the gameplay itself. Especially in older RPG games, players would often have to do the same actions over and over again. Challenge only occured when you had to fight bosses. I can't name the number times I have been bored while wandering in FF II and fighting minor enemies.

I think that's why I like Disgaea so much and would like Phantom Brave even more. (SOMEONE BETTER BRING PHANTOM BRAVE OUT IN AMERICA!!!) There's a lot of fun in the battles themselves, IMHO.

Another viewpoint can be seen in the article, Bad Game Designer, No Twinkle. You have to gain money by killing things, and then buy better items to kill more things. Some people don't like shopping and just want constant actions.

    Im with Squize.

Action.. and lots of it.. As much as I like a good RPG (GoldenSun,FFTA,Mario&Luigi Super Star) you cant beat a game you can fire up and play, blowing lots of stuff up.

My favourite genre is platformer/first person shooter.

My favourite fps games are the Quake's.. simply cause there an action game. You join, you kill, you leave. My favourite platformers are the Mario's (With Contra/Metal slug close behind)

I guess the games you like reflect the games you make.. Cause you can seriously tell from my games, deffinately Squizes. and Marmottes too =D

    Long live the action heads.

that's right... that's why because i really want to produce a game of each genre...
hey, i'm a *multimedia* designer after all
i even listen to all kinds of musics: i'm pretty much open to all kinds of stuffs, so for the games i have no "real" bareers too, i can play anything really. have you already tried to play a hamburger simulation in japanese language? i did it...

" I guess the games you like reflect the games you make."

    That's so true.

I mentioned it to you before marmotte, but JBJ Sisters was my attempt to make a "marmotte" game.
After doing the trilogy I was sick of all things shooting, and wanted to see if I could be more that a one card trick.

Dunno if it worked or not ( JBJ is far and away our most popular game hit wise ), but I can't stand it. It took ages to finish where I was just sick of it.

I'm not saying I'll only ever do shooters, but it is what I'm best at, what I prefer writing and playing.

Personally, I like cross-pollination games or games that go into a different direction.

Example: Phantom Brave is a SRPG with a few twist. First, you only have one character appear on the map. Marrone is a spirit summoner, and you must summon different spirits into different objects on screen. (Like trees, rocks, lost weapons and even the dead bodies of enemies...) In addition, each spirit has a possession timelimit, and after that time limit expires, they will be pulled out of the game.

So it goes beyond the typical SRPG adding tons of new possibilities, tactics, so it's just not brainless battle, since you can't win that way.

    And for those programming geeks...

    It's also COMPLETELY GRIDLESS!
