    IF you ever saw Stargate (thats the sci fi program where they had the wormhole and stuff) they had a good idea. Interstellar civilisations used a language based on the elements of the periodic table, as that is starndard where ever you go.

    But aren't there a lot of elements in the table that only exist as the result of lab experiments? Wouldn't that mean some would be lacking certain 'letters'? Or do they assume that each civiliztion realizes the mathematical progression of the chart and accounts for elements not yet created in labs on their world?

    well, there are about 100 stable natural elements so i think thats enough. Most languages today have as few characters as possible. binary has 2, dec has 10 and hex has 16. 100 should be more than enough for a desent language.

    Those aren't languages, they are number systems with different bases.

    For those interested, forgot to mention an other book, The End of Certainty from Ilya Prigogine is a very good read and shows why we still know only a small part of reality. Really a must read.

    We would of done a little better during the "dark age" if didn't Alexandria's Library hadn't been burnt down.
