The draft will never be re-instated. It's political suicide. People are bringing it up only to persuade people to vote Democrat in Nov. It's a scare tactic.

    Don't fall for it.

    It's not going to happen.
I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything. Then I get used to the place and I don't notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.

By the way, I don't know about the rest of you, but if the draft were reinstated, I would fight for my country if necessary and I certainly would not desert it.

But then again, I'm also thinking about applying to the USNA...

    fight for what?
    Is Iraq invading us?
    Are they mounting an attack?
    Are they stockpilling weapons?
    Did they kick your dog?

What exactly are you going to fight for?

Well, we've already established that Iraq won't demand a draft. Whether or not Iraq was a just war shouldn't be debated here. I'm saying that if we had to get involved in another fight, I would serve if necessary.

I've stated that I would fight if drafted in another similar thread here at FK... not because I believed in what the troops are deployed for, but moreso because I would label it as a civil duty.

    just like voting.

to reiterate. I do not believe in the "story" about why the US/UK troops are deployed. not one bit. but I would fight for my country out of a sense of duty. nothing else.

at the risk of a giant flaming, may i congratulate gerbick and ultima for their paitriotism.

surely if you believed that the present situation was right as strongly as that you would volunteer to fight in this conflict - who is to say that the next conflict will be any more just than this one, or that the draft will do anything but supply cannon fodder to this present operation.

i would applaud your courage and convction if you were to march off of your own free will and do your civic duty as opposed to being compelled to do it.

how many lives will be ruined by dodging the draft, or a jail term for objecting to the situation that you are being drafted into.

i hope that the draft is never re-introduced, and the necessity for such a tool never be needed again.

or if it is perhaps they should start with the card carrying and bumper sticker brandishing members of the National Rifle Association

    perhaps i'm just old fashioned

    peace,love and understanding

p.s. in my heart i hope neither of you is ever called up. nor anyone else.

Like I said, the closer I get to college application time, the more I am leaning towards applying to the U.S. Naval Academy. I am seriously considering service and if I go that route I want to ensure that I attain the education that will allow me to really make a difference.

Now I just need to get myself to be able to run 10:30 for the 1.5 mile, do forty push-ups in two minutes, and do sixty-five sit-ups in two minutes.

    Going Hypothetical Here

If a US citizen is strongly behind the Right to bare arms (the basis for the Right to Have Guns issue), should'nt he be denied the right to refuse the draft or labeled a Hypocrit?(preferably on national TV).

I am assuming this right was granted to enable/legitimise Non-Military Persons who take up arms in self defence of their Land, Properties & Families?

I suppose this throws up the question of Gun-Law campaigners not being allowed a career with the Military as well.

Not much of an argument, just a Lateral Idea that this topic sparked off in a quiet corner of my brain.

imagine it's a lot like jury duty. but without as many escape clauses.

that's what the draft, in terms of civic duty, would represent, basically. asbsolutely nothing to do with the right to bear arms. that's a constitutional right. big difference.
