how to get media attention?
I am/will be working for a non profit company very soon and I will have a chance to do some promoting/marketing.
When we hold an event, what's the best way to get press/media coverage?
Would sending out a press release be sufficent? Follow it up with a phone call? Send a press release with a link to a website that has a presskit? Spend the money and print out a press kit and send it to the media outlets?
Thanks in advance!

tell me, is this sellable.....
if you have a budget for printing out a press kit, rather than doing that, contract a PR firm. There specialist contacts will make it a better investment than you printing out a nice kit, when an agency will just send an email.
my 2 cents.

I have found that local papers are always looking for articles.
Recently we won an award in college ( a minor award in conjunction with an engineering company ). We rang the local paper ( as we are trying to bring the software to the market )and a photographer came and took our picture at the college. The picture has since been in four papers and didn't cost us anything.
Considering you are an existing company maybe some sort of press release may be the way to go, but a quick phonecall to a local paper can't do any harm in my limited experience.

and truth be told you can do your own digital press release to the relevant portals, newspapers ect, with addicion trafic that generates, and backlinks.
