    Battle Maps... is it possible

    Battle Maps, is it possible...

    Challenge!

    Overview:
    In all battles the fog off war descends and often masks the truth (history normally only records the victors view of events, these are often so far from the truth that they are written more for Hollywood than for the history books).

    Some times though those defeated are allowed to tell their story. These stories are more often expressed as dates, times and locations.
    When you compare the victor’s story with those defeated it becomes obvious that one side (or even both) are heavily distorted.
    Often those that should be remembered are laid not to rest but to waste.

    My question is…
    In flash is it possible to create a mapping tool that can handle the following;
    1. On a graphical map (location) plot the path of armed forces (groups) from differing countries (nationality) on a time line that can be broken down into hours (time) and sometimes as small as minutes?

    2.Historian’s are historians and not flash guru’s or programmers therefore the interface has to suit their requirements;

    a.The interface has to be intuitive and to allow for the following;
    i.Any map of fixed proportion (to allow for a grid), that the historian can insert (the battle ground).

    ii.The ability to add Nationality, Regiment, Battalion, Company and even a Platoon (the last one can be the most interesting)

    iii.The ability to a give a geographical location fixed co-ordinates (ie; I was here, then I went there – these places once referenced to a name the user can plot the location and this will be remembered).

    iv. The ability to graphically pin point a location and this be databased and be able o be previewed in a time line that can be controlled.

    The end result is really the ability to interpret the above information in a graphical format and see what’s what and remove the fog of war.

    This is the start, anyone interested the possibility of playing their part in delivering the truth or even the possibility of a commercial venture then write me, any feedback will not be ignored.

    I like the idea to reveal the lies from the victors

    I would say it should not be hard to have just a grid where you can stick in some pins with colored heads, and label these pins with dates and times.
    It does not really matter either, whether you put known positions into one sheet, or separate sheets per day, or whatever.
    The result will be a simple animation, either through local actionscript or through server interaction, where these items just move at constant speed from one location to the next.

    Now, just load a map as background image ...
