    48 Hour Flashkit Competition WINNERS!

Well it's finally over; The Fifth Annual 48 Hour Flashkit Competition. Am I happy? Well, let's just say that this year things didn't quite turn out how I wanted them too, but on the whole there were some great games submitted and I still believe that some people had fun.I do admit that it was a bit disorganized compared to other years in the sense that so many people showed enthusiasm to join except no one actually followed through. At the end of the 48 hours, only a few games total were submitted. That's definately not good for a competition! So I decided to extend everything by 48 hours, making it a bit of a "96 Hour" competition, even though some people had actually finished their game on time. Was it fair for them? Well that's up to them to decide, but atleast with the extension we now have 10 games that were submitted. That's a fair amount of people if I may say so. So maybe things didn't work out as planned, but some aspects of it still worked and fortunately didn't fail completely! Note to self: Host it better next time.

Now I know that this year the topic was relatively weird. Normally its "weird" stuff like Almonds and telephone wires, but the fact that this year it was a tad more specific and demanded a bit more effort threw some people off. Maybe that's why not too many people joined in the end. I don't know... I mean do you like topics like those or topics like almonds and telephone wires. After all, I'm trying to please you guys and not so much myself so whatever you want I'll try my best to do. Hopefully with the feedback I have received, the next competition would be a bit better. Ugh, I hope I didn't let anyone down.

    Topic: Business Through the Ages.

Why am I talking so much? Lol, I know you guys just want to know the winners so here they are:

    COMMENTS

RipX : Very impressive game. I loved the style of how you had to make a path to get a certain part of your spaceship. Although I never got around to completing it, I found that it is very original and clever. Sounds could have been added, but on the whole it was very good. The time period is a bit ambiguous but the product part was nice. Good job!

Jesserules : At first I didn't quite understand how to play (instructions were too long) but after a while I got used to the gameplay and discovered that it was pretty fun. Seeing as though it is a good game engine, adding in better graphics and sound would be rather easy and would complete the game. Unfortunately, the time period wasn't really reflected that well, but the product was shown very efficiently. Good job!

MechaPiano : Wow! What can I say? This is a perfect example of a game containing all aspects of artwork, originality, hard work and fun! The "slaveryesque" style and the odd mood that it sets the viewer in makes the gameplay fun and compelling. I can't really tell what time it was set in, but it was still very good. However, I cannot make the right potion and honestly....can you?

Baukereg : Why oh why did you not finish it? I was looking forward to playing your gauntlet style caveman game. Hopefully you can finish it sometime soon so we can all see what we had been waiting for.

Phobik : What's better than jumping on flimsy platforms in mid air while trying to avoid kites and Da Vinci's secret gizmos.... I liked how you could choose characters and then find a way to making the Wright Plane Prototype. Good job! (Note: The time period could have been more explicit. Maybe an old "film" effect and black and white)

Allilm : Yeeehaa! Every year after I host this contest, I always go out in the west and trade gunpowder. Now you just brought my fantasy even closer! I really liked the time period and the concept of travelling the desert with guns to trade goods. The product aspect could have been worked on a bit more, and the desert got a bit boring after a while, but the idea, art and gameplay was really well thought of and executed. I liked the getting off the horse bit and walking around and the shooting bandits in the head part. Actually, I liked the whole thing. Good job!

Thehumanchimp : Rumor has it that Erik the Red tried to connect tribes with telecom wires...Hehe. I found that it was a bit hard to get used to and a bit repetitive, but the idea was there and the originality was overflowing. The time period was fair and the product was a bit lacking, but once you got a hang of the game you just wanted to help those poor communicationless vikings. I liked it. Good work!

T1ger : Mmm....sandwiches. Now seeing as though you won this year's contest, I hope you will live up to your word and make that toaster work! I must say that I really enjoyed playing your game and it brought back many memories of all the times I tried so hard to digitally assemble a sandwich and eat it.. Man.. The gameplay was fast after a few levels and really became quite challenging. The art and originality was really good and the only thing that was lacking was a well represented time period. Oh well, we can't have everything now can we? I really loved the game and admire how much work you put into it(after its first version had you putting mustard and ketchup on weird outlines of bread..hehe, you needed that extension). Great work! (Oh and there is a small bug when you go to pick up butter or jam: your sleeve becames translucent)

Kakihara : Yipee! Killing zombies is my fav pastime. The tilebased system was really cool and the countdown put a lot of stress on me. Sounds would have been nice and some touchup on the graphics would have completed the whole game. It was really interesting and fun to play and help that poor little Peter. Poor guy....

MD004: Although I was having a lot of trouble logging on, I just right click and pressed play to get to the action! It was then that I realized how much I liked the idea and the fact that at some places you would have to get your teammate to press a button so you could go through and then help him to get across the electric field. Better graphics and time period would have helped a lot, but in general it was a really neat idea, especially since it was multiplayer! Good job!

Well I think that's about it. Thank you everyone for being part of this year's competition, and don't forget: EVERYONE IS A WINNER. Hopefully there will be more people next time and the whole thing would be amazingly hot stuff to brag about. Once again, thank you all and I hope you all had fun. Till next time!

    Nah just kidding

Wow! This was really unexpected! Although the votes were free for all to see, and I saw that many voted for me in the different categories, I never counted them to see who won. I really can't thank the people who voted for me enough! I love that you found my game fun, original and all around good This really encourage me to make more games!

Even though I've made games on and off for a long time, this is only the third game I've ever completed, and it's definitly the best!

And about that toaster i promised you. I will make it soon, just as I promise in the game. But I think I need an extension:P

And yeah, I know about that bug BeatCow, I just couldn't fix it until this competition was over. But thanks anyway

Congrats to all of you who participated! We're all winners in my eyes

And I thought about hosting all the games in this years competition on my site, so they wont get lost or sth. when we want to check them out next time we host such a competition. So if anyone has something against that, please say so.

    And thanks again

I have to say that at first in the voting of the comp i got disappointed because I thought I wasn't going to get any place, but finally, thanx to God an all who voted for my game, I got a second and a third place... that rocks!. Thanx yall!

Beatcow: don't feel bad, it wasn't your fault that this comp didn't get as planned. Maybe there wasn't much enthusiasm but I have to say that personally I did enjoy it and that you did a great job!. Your topic was very nice too so don't think it was your fault.
Also about that of making the game like an old film I thought so but I asked my sister how could it look better and she said definitely with colors, and that black and white could look boring so that's why I didn't do so, but thanx for the advice.
Also I think it could be nice to add a "Best use of the topic" category next time, or something like that, for people to vote who adapted the topic better to its game.

That's much of what I have to say and thanx again .

    Congratulations T1ger!

    Here's your trophy:

Youpy, I won the honourable mention award! I'll promise to finish the game soon!

    Some comments for Beatcow:
I think because this the kind of topic this time was so different than other times, it made people a bit confused. For myself, just a simpel topic like 'cows' or 'kitchen' are more fun, cause you really have to come up with a fun idea about this topics. This time, I think many people had trouble because the topic did gave us many freedom, but still pushed us in some kind of direction.

I also think, it should be better the next time to announce the competition like two or maybe even three weeks before it starts. There are many people (like me) that only check this board once in a while, and so it's easy to miss a competition if it's announces just a couple of days before it starts. Don't let people complaining 'bout having no time let you down: there will always be people that can't participate, and there will always be enough that can!

I hope you appriciate my comments. It's not like I feel bad about this competition: we did have a lot of fun, do we guys?! And I really appriciate your initiative to set up this competition! Thanks man!

Looking forward for the next competition!

Hey well done Tiger on your win its well deserved and well done to everyone else who participated as well.

Thank you for the most hard work award and the third place in the most fun award i really appreciate it, i realise that i overstretched a little with the tilebased engine and i should have stuck with my simple but addictive games style but im proud of my little game anyway.

Also id like to congratulate Beatcow on a well put together contest, even if it didnt quite go as smoothly if we would have all hoped.

    Well done everyone.

ps. When is the next comp.

oh my, I feel like I should say something too...

    ermm...

but I don't really know what to say,

just good luck to everyone who has participated,
    to those who didn't -->
I would like to thank Beatcow for hosting the whole thing (I know it's hard),
I would also like to ask everyone to participate in the next 48h

    guess that would be it.

P.S. Baukereg, waiting for your game
