Sony PS3 might not be backwards compatible...
As with any consumer electronics that hasn't been released as of yet, take with a grain of salt; however, this is not the first time I've heard this.

There has been rumors about the omission of the necessary chips to pull this off from being pulled from the CELL based machine - the PS2 has the original MIPS R3300a processor in there actually for PS1 playback.
Oh, and if you're still thinking I'm anti-Sony... I totally forgot. I'm the writer of the original Playstation FAQ way back in 1994.

wow you copied and pasted like a master back then, what happend?
Couldn't the previous 2 consoles or at least the first one be emulated with the power of the new box?

You try copying and pasting via Vi
Seriously though, that's not the full original with the wiring configs and what not. I even bothered SCEJ enough - that was when I was trying to get a job in video games, went to Sega, LTD. instead in Japan.
Silver, I was in uni in '94, 20 years old - second semester Junior in fact. And from my comparing our spelling tendencies... university paid off. Big time.

Didn't do it.

That has to be one of the funnier exchanges I've ever seen here at FK - and I can't even explain why...
Backward compatitbility to PS2 is more concerning to me than to PS1. Seeing as some of the recent silver PS2's have had their own compatibility issues with even current gen games, this makes me a bit nervous...

Sony's gonna let a lot of people down if they can't support at least PS2 games on it.
They pretty much set a new standard for themselves with backwards compatibilty. Everyone expects it now and they're gonna b*tch if they don't get it.
Shoulda thought that one through better.

The PS2 wasn't 100% compatible either. Nothing new. They speak of maybe 9 games out of over thousand. If that's a problem to you, then what about the xbox 360 with only three compatible games at launch?

Neither's not been released yet. I can't wait to see what the final silicon does.

That's usually my question to you. In this case, it's to deliver a notice.
At least I have a reason... and no bias. Don't target me boy. I'm just the deliverer.

Actually: old!
It's the exact same statement they made at E3.

E3 thread? I'm sure it's somewhere in there. And if not than just because there was so much more exiting news, pics, movies ... to post. It was Sony's statement from the beginning that they want the backward compatibility as close to 100% as possible. I think it was even mentioned in that Sony press conference stream with one of the power-point slides.

E3 2005: PlayStation's Back, Alright!
Backwards-compatibility re-confirmed.
by Nix
May 16, 2005 - The big excitement of this year's Sony Conference at E3 was about the new PlayStation 3, but don't let news of a new system deter you from getting psyched for the PS2 games that will be shown on the show floor (and PS1, if there happens to be an amazing PS1 game to report on this year ... Hey, it could happen.) Sony reconfirmed as part of its E3 unveiling of PS3 that the system will be backwards-compatible with PS2 and PS1 games.
There was no word in this news on whether texture smoothing might be used to improve PS2/PS1 games -- the PlayStation 2 had rudimentary filters to help run PlayStation 1 games with a cleaner look and with less loadtimes, so it is hoped that we'll see some advancements with this new monster machine on the games everybody already owns.
Look for a test of PS3's backwards compatibility a long, long time from now. In the meantime, we'll be covering all of the PS2 games (and PS1 games) that you should be buying in preparation for this new Sony console. Oh, and obviously, to play and enjoy the hell out of in the meantime...

Ladies, ladies - can I have your attention?
The mud truck is only now pulling up to the back door, so we're expecting to get the main event up and running within the next 30 minutes.
Until then, have a cocktail, relax - and please, hands off your opponent's bikini until we're in the ring.
