Heli Attack!
New Super Mario Brothers - Water Effect
So I've been up for about 24 hours, and I got bored, playing with DisplacementMap and movieclips.
If theres a better way to do it (without MC's) I'd be happy to see it.

Have fun.
ps. Excuse the awful code, its a hacked up tech test =D
pps. Attaching is good for the soul

nice, i think the displacement needs to start exactly when the player hits the top of the water, it looks kinda weird, but it does displace nicely, just a matter of timing it

i guess you could use perlin noise, i've seen examples but never used it, here's a source file from someone else

I knew someone would complain about that =D Fixed.

I tried perlin noise, but you cant position it, only do broad ripples, in that example you posted, he uses a gradient to change the size of the ripple, I assume that could work, but again, you'd be using gradients to choose the position of the ripples, which is what I'm doing now =(
On another note, you can make a really nice looking water effect, by a 2 octave Perlin noise, and animating one of the octaves.

yeah, sorry i can't help much, i'm still just learning displacmentMaps
nice work though, why the New Super Mario Brothers, is that a hint hint for an upcomming release perhaps

Nah, in the DS game, theres levels with water like this, where it ripples when you jump in, I was just copying the effect.

Sorry, I downloaded Test.zip and saw a black block that can be moved with arrow keys and spacebar for jump. I don't see water anywhere, I must miss something...

Thanks it works, I see the water now. Didn't know that difference between the browser player and the standalone player. Nice promising effect iopred, would it be possible to post the little actionscript code here as I can't open it without flash 8?

Looks cool but looks more like jello or a sheet... you know? A substance that's way thicker than water.

I asume iopred did the effect with Flash8, there for useing AS 2.0.

Having the code will be of no use, as you don't have Flash 8.

Of course it's useful! Can't you read a code without compiling? Nevertheless if the code is too big I understand you don't post it here, it's enough now I will buy Flash 8 ^^ (or maybe I should wait for flash 9...)!

When you get Flash 8, open the fla.

I don't understand once again your point of view as unlike you, it seems to me very useful. Ok then I'll buy Flash 8 to have the priviledge to see your code.

Reason: Really not the place to discuss these
