    nice!

coincidently I'm in the middle of a gta style game. With some decent forethought and planning it's actually coming along nicely, recreating central london is certainly a challenge though! - not so much wet dreams but sleepless nights!

BTW, GTA 1 and 2 is so much better than the 3D-versions! Ive spent 50 times more time playing 1 and 2.. Just explains how bad the 3D-focus is for the game-market. Imagine if they made the next GTA in top-down-view again.. that would be cool and interesting

And I have the exact opposite view. I think the 3D ones are so much better and they sold tons more than the originals.

I honestly hate gta. Not my idea of fun at all. How boring is it to create a realistic city? Make a fantasy-sf-hyper-fluffy city and you might grab my attention.
    But I'm probably just weird.

Sales are never representative for the quality.

Fall, is your opinion due to casual observation of the game or did you play it much? I loved GTA III (though at first I felt like it was "drive to A, drive to B" over and over, but then it got a little more interesting), and San Andreas was just great in so many ways.

I did play GTA 2 (I think) for more than a bit.
I just don't like driving games in general, plus the whole dark urban atmosphere isn't my cup of tea - mind you, I don't mind it in movies if it's done well, but for some reason in a game world it doesn't work for me.
I like fantasy worlds, stunning views, gripping storylines, likeable characters, plot twists, etc. So, mostly RPG's.
But hey, no disrespect to GTA fans at all.

You really should at least play GTA Vice City. I disliked the older GTA's myself and didn't think I'd like the new ones. However, I was surprised when I found out that a LOT has changed with the 3D versions. It also isn't the "dark urban atmosphere" crap which is being spewed out in the game world nowadays (BLUE SKY FOR ALL). Admittedly, if there wasn't so much thought behind GTA San Andreas, you could ALMOST categorize it there.

The things that GTA Vice City, and San Andreas have that a lot of immitators don't is there is a rather interesting plot with a lot of characters, and a wicked sense of humor and style (GTA III: Mob movies, GTA Vice City: Miami Vice/the 80s in America, GTA San Andreas: Boys In the Hood and the gansta film genre), clever dialogue, and tons of tributes to movies and games.

Plus if you ever get bore with the main game, you can go do something else. There are a lot of side quests or you can make up your own quests.

Also YOU DON'T HAVE TO KILL HOOKERS OR COPS TO WIN THE GAME (this sentence is for Hillary Clinton)! In fact, if I get bored, I just go stunt riding, looking for cool jumps, etc... Never went on one rampage or anything like that.

    recently...

Well, you're probably right, if I gave it a chance, I might like it. But the thing is, I have about 60 games lying around (ps1, n64, ps2, cube, gba, psp, ds and pc) that I still need to play, and most of these interest me more than GTA, so it probably won't happen

I didnt find it funny - Tony

GTA is the game that got me interested in game development. I made maps, cars, missions and changed all in-game related stuff. I even planned on making my own game from it, a James-Bond game

GTA was my first scripting experience, and I was only 11 back then Cant imagine my brother will start scripting in 4 years..

Quality is a subjective matter, like personal taste
If you are a professional and you are not making something only you will use, you always have to care about what your clients want. This is called marketing.

Actually marketing is often the ability to create a need which did not exist before...

Well,Marketing i was talking, at least that one Philip Kotler teaches,
is about making research, know what people want, make more research, give them what they want and, make more research and if you can, exceed their expectations
For more information i sugest this
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/013...lance&n=283155
Anyway, if you made the game better tham your client imagined, are you creating a need that didnt exist before?
But this is all going off topic so...well, i dont care anyway
