    [Beta] Fish Snipe

    Hey guys,

I started playing around with flash about a year ago, but got sidetracked with oter stuff and never took it any further. A couple days ago, I decided to actually start and complete a game.

I created all of the graphics yesterday. The fish were drawn with the pencil tool and a wacom tablet (im not too good at vectors, but I just orderd an illustrator cs2 book to try and improve). The bullets, reload, and oxygen tank were built with vectors in flash. The background was created in photoshop, taking inspiration from DayDream's post in another thread about a fish game. They aren't the best graphics, but I think they work out alright.

It is very simple. You shoot (click on) fish as they swim by. Over time, the fish appear on the screen faster. All of the fish have random sizes and random speeds. The points awarded per fish is based on its difficulty (size and speed).

The game goes on until you run out of oxygen. Killing a fish replenishes a small amount of oxygen. You do, however, have to reload after every 8 shots, so I don't think it is possible to keep the game going forever (if it is, I'll have to adjust the per fish oxygen bonus).

I am pretty sure the game is finished aside from some small details. I need to add menu button sounds and maybe some background music (if you know any free sounds that would be good, please let me know).

    So here it is:

I would really appreciate any feedback you can give to help me improve it.

    Thank you!

I don't like the fact that you have to click the reload button to reload. I would prefer pressing the space bar or a keyboard key to reloaded. Having to press the button on the bottom of the screen throws you off.

Hmm, could that be a problem with the fonts? I thought that Flash ran uniformly across all platforms.

That was one of the choices that I had to make, but when I set reload to an actual key, it was way too easy and I hardly missed a beat when playing the game. This can cause the game to go on literally forever.

The idea with the reload button is that you have to "grab" your bullets in order to put them into your gun.

It's pretty good. I don't like having to hit the reload button, but I think your right about how it'd be to easy. mabey another alternitive? could get creative...mabey, make the canvas about 200 px bigger on all sides, then center it, make the sides a button so you can do the old school "shoot off screen to reload".

    Just some creative idea's...

Draw a harpoon gun and make it shoot spears. Most guns wont work under wanter properly.

If you miss a taget make the harpoons fade out into the back ground.

If you kill a fish make it float up to the top upside down, as fish do when dead. They dont incerate and leave a few blood drops in the water.

Possably play some smooth bubbling sounds in the background with some very faint running water sounds... (You dont have to have 1 sound consistantly looping as a background, it realy makes a difference if you can have a few differnt sounds and 1 or 2 loops being played...)

    Differnt fish would be good.

Need some more oomph to the game concept, its preaty bland and done way to much by new flashers.

When a fish is killed, make some bubbes to that fly to your air tank so there is some indication that its being filled and depending on how cpu intesive it becomes make some bubbles float out of the tank as its decresing.

There was more, but i forgot them..

Anyhoo, it aint as bad as some peoples and does have some potential to be something preaty decent...

    Looks promising, but....
    I have found a bug:
    - Hi-scores seems to be out of order.
And here are couple of suggestions:
    - The game is too short, i can recommend you divide game to levels.
    - It will be great if you change fish hit animation to something more interesting.
    - It is un-clear to me which weapon i use to shoot.
    - It will be great if you'll give opportunity to use different weapons. Each one with his own behaviour.

Then just add a timer/counter. Let the reload take half a second or something. You could show the bullets filling up at the button or something to visualize it.

Appart from that, pretty nice game, but needs improvement.

These suggestions would definately make it more realistic... but im not trying to get too realistic here.

Thank you for the comments though, I will take them into consideration.

I was working on the highscores feature lastnight and never finished it. It is working now aside from the PHP page needing "prettier" styling.

The game is supposed to be short. I never meant it to have any levels. My next game will be more complex with levels.

I agree about the fish hit animation. I'll give Gloo pot's suggestion a try where the fish turn upside down and float up. The idea was that the "powerful" gun is exploding the fish.

There is no need for different weapons because the goal of each one would be to simply click on the fish.

Thats actually a nice idea. I'll try it out and see how I like it.

You still can't play in safari? Do you come across many flash games that can't play in safari?

As for making the fish in photoshop... it wouldn't work because they have to be scaleable.

Thanks everyone for the comments and criticism!

Same as above. Could use better gun, bullet, death effects. Other than that its a good concept.
