If you have Flash 8 I would defenitly consider using the new class externalInterface.
Gives you a lot of posibilities to do js2as and as2js communication. Haven't used it much but what I did it seemed stabe.
Never accept the first 'impossible' unless it comes from a lady.

Get and SetVariable is not supported in NN6 (Mac or PC), Safari (Mac), Firefox (Mac) or IE (Mac). I dont know why software developers for Mac suck so hard, but there you go.
The only workaround compliant to Flash player 6 (as we have to develop for) is to create a 'hidden' flash object that communicates with your main flash object. Refresh the embedded 'hidden flash object' with variables parsed in the embed source.

In answer to this posting, check out the new "best method" of embedding flash content since the "IE click to Activate" Activex issues. According to the docs, its even mac compatible.
swfobject
It uses javascript, and gives you the ability to display alertnative HTML/image content if the user does not have flash or javascript enabled.
It has variable communication abilities... see here for more details, I havent tried anything "too" advanced with it yet, but I can honestly say its very easy to use once you get used to it.
