Magicians use misdirection. not distraction.
If you did not see the gorilla the first time, don't worry, thats whats expected of you. I did not see it until the end, but then I though it was someone from the other team leaving.

i saw the monkey, it had no bearing at the task at hand. the question stated was how many times does the white team pass the ball. the answer to that question is 14, however some people were unable to remain counting when a simple distraction entered their field of view causing people to either a.) lose count, b.) laugh.
In either case a or b the person demonstrates that they are unable to handle simple tasks and should not under any circumstances be placed in a high pressure life or death situation where they could potentially jeopardise the life of themselves of those around them.
example.
you need to watch a screen and keep track of pings on the sonar, and then judge trajectory, and pick out what is potentially dangerous. a fruit fly buzzes by your face, your ship gets hit by a torpedo because you noticed a fly.
if however the monkey had swatted the ball and caused a disturbance to the task at hand that is a whole different ballgame.
example.
as above you are watching the screen, the area you are in springs a leak. you inform someone while still maintaining visuals on the task at hand. you save the day.
or maby im just thinking to much. maby im just not capable of seeing a monkey walking through a crowd of people as anything more then a simple distraction that wasn't able to take me from the task.
im pretty competitive so i like to win. to me getting the question correct is more important then going "ooh you got me there is a monkey wow.. look at that.. a monkey ha ha good one."
maby this task is different because we didn't have the question afterwards "did you notice anything odd" because if someone had asked that i would have said, well about halfway to 2 thirds of the way through a guy in a gorilla costume walked through the crowd and pounded on his chest before leaving.
regardless it doesn't change the answer to the question that was asked which is 14.
in the end this is just a stupid discussion about a video that is even more stupid, with a task that was too easy and a gorilla costume that wasn't important.

Silver, you still don't seem to get it - most people (yourself included, even if you want to try to pretend otherwise) don't even notice the gorilla: their attention is so narrowly focused that they ignore what, by all logical measures, should be a noteworthy event.
I'll admit the first time I saw this (several years ago) I didn't see it either - so don't worry about 'winning' here (I'll even spot you a as a prize if it turns the tantrums off).

What I want to know is, while you were all watching that monkey, did any of you notice the massive pig?

ok. I must be weird. I actually stopped counting when I saw the gorilla and especially how they weren't paying attention to it.
-
bit late in the day but i'm with silverx2 here.
a distraction whether noticed or not
does not change the question or the answer.
bah.
