HP laptop & System restore..
HIYA-
I got a HP laptop that had a DEAD harddrive...
figured I'd throw in this extra 10-20 gig HD I had to see what was up...
using the supplied system restore disks (4).. it looks as if the origianl HD must have had some sort of system restore volume/partion that these DISKS look for.
Anyone know more about this..and how to by pass it?..ot set a HD like the original was again?
thanks

If it were me i would trash the oem discs and install from a regular xp disk.
But, of course those oem disks, or maybe the system restore partition may contain the drivers for the laptops hardware.
You maybe able to get the drivers from hp.com or driversguide.com

Wow, where did this thread come from? Sorry you go no reponse. If it's anything like their Compaq restores, you should be able to set up the hard drive with the system disk. What happens when you try to install Windows?

Can't bypass it I know I've tried. Even spending more hours with hp support then the computer was worth While brand machines have gotten better in regards to thier branding setup you still get a lot of junk that clogs things up.
Between fighting all the OEM crap that's pre installed and the fact that,
I'm too lazy and lack the essential knowledge to build my own system these days.
I just go to a screw driver shop pay em to build for me. For a few pennies and the week between initial order and delivery I get reliability and if something does go wrong I don't have to ship out to Egypt for a repair.

Thanks, work is good. I Just got my tax return and ordered parts to upgrade all of my PCs.
There are allot of really good builders out there right now, but unfortunately there are twice as many builders that have no business building one off customs.
For your laptop problem i would just put a fresh install of xp on there, the oem installs are usually loaded with worthless crap anyway.
If you do go with a fresh install of xp and need help getting any drivers let me know.
