Why should there be any Flash API?

The natural flow is to keep the interface as far as possible from the logics, and Flash is interface. A search form doesn't require any application interface.

It looks pretty simple to me. There is a video player, a search form and a manager. When you type in, the server chooses what video to load and sends in the search results...

The girl is charming and I managed to get the "190 pounds, loneliest person in the world" clip!
    Hehe..

Why does this site keep coming up in the newsletter as a featured site? It has novelty value, excellent production values and alot of time has obviously been lavished on it, BUT as a functional website it's ****! As a search engine who gives a flying monkey what ms dewey thinks of a subject for two minutes before she spits out some search results. The results spat out are then presented in a really limited fashion. There are reasons Google stormed to the top of the search tree - speed, accuracy and ease of use.
Ms Dewey just reminds me of the flash sites circa 2000 that inspired the term 'Flashturbation' (boo.com anyone?). These sites give Flash a bad reputation.

    agreed-

I find it CRAZY that people cant understand the fact that certain things make a site 'cool' to them. I do believe has to be some level of quality.. but MANY different features are eye candy MANY different designers.

I think the site is 'cool' witht he fact that you can tell time & effort went into it.. the video...the search..etc..

Do I think its the BEST, most practical? no.. but seems like a great proprietary application that can be used to BRAND or keep in-house.

yeah i agree whipers, cool sites are more about giving ideas to people about how others are pushing flash to the max, and what is possible...u take what u can from them ... it's not always about practicality...

I hope you are not suggesting that a site can't be practical, usable AND cool.
If you read my post again you'll see that I praised the site. What I objected to was the inordinate amount of praise it seems to be receiving, ie. featuring week after week in the newsletter. Plenty of other cool sites get a single mention in the newsletter. Ms Dewey is worthy of being brought to our attention in the newsletter once, but not repeatedly.

I take your point about inspiring people, but it's important with sites like ms Dewey that their limitations aswell as their qualities are highlighted. There's more to be learnt from discussing the strengths and weaknesses of a site than just saying 'yeah, like cool, wicked site'.

Really? I would have gone through life without realising this had you not helpfully pointed it out to me. Very public spirited of you. Cheers.

I said as much in my original post, lots of effort has been expended on it. Effort in and of itself though doesn't make a site worthy of coolness.

Not entirely sure what you mean here. If you mean keep in-house as proof of the technical skills of the team behind it; then great.
If you mean sell it to other companies to use under their brand; then no way. Your average user would use Ms Dewey once, say 'yeah cool' but quickly get disillusioned with the results and head back to Google. Silentweed is more perceptive about this, what he's suggesting is that Ms. Dewey be treated as a 'proof of concept' that demonstrates what can be done, not that it will transfer into a fully usable, popular website with staying power.

May we call it "advanced design"? That is the kind of "head-in-the-clouds" projects that are developed to a superficial scale from specific teams in a company, to analyze new perspectives and frontiers, inspiring the work of designers and engineers at work within the company.

Such concepts needn't be binded by hands-on rules, like ergonomy, connection standards, marketing attitude etc.. That's the point: it's just like brainstorming, you have to spit out 10 stupid ideas to get a sensible one out. And 10 sensible ideas to get a good one out. But if you don't let yourself go, you ain't going to get the stupid ideas out, thus preventing the whole thing to work.

This is an advanced concept, with no purpose other than inspiring minds.

I love how you push YOUR ideaology on others.. fantastic!

you repeatedly put what YOU think is cool into the catagory of what is FACT and the 'rule of thumb' for others.. (nice job)

no more need to even continue talking with you.

Go back to 'google'...cause everytime you go there..it gets 'cooler'.. (Im sure)

cause we all know only good speed, search & reliability are what count for a cool site.. LOL... (too funny)

Who mentioned IDEOLOGY? All I'm advocating (NOT pushing) is that people recognise the strengths and weaknesses of a site like Ms Dewey, rather than blindly falling before it in worship.

I'm not sure you actually READ what has been posted here. I haven't stated what I think is cool once, nevermind repeatedly.

Well that says everything anybody might ever need to know about you really doesn't it. I won't be crying on my pillow tonight if you don't continue. However you'll find in life that there's more to be gained from listening, discussing and retaining an open mind about a subject.

My point was never that Google is cool; it was that it is a better search engine. Again you either fail to read or fail to comprehend what you have read here.

Anyway on the subject of Google, the search engine itself isn't 'cool'. However a lot of things they do like Google Maps are pretty cool. Particularly when you consider that they make APIs available for general use which can then be integrated into applications, like on the iPhone allowing you to find information about stuff around wherever you happen to be. Oh, and crucially it's easy to use in an elegant and simple way; meaning ordinary people will use it.

For once we agree, I did laugh at this line, loads. Except I laughed at how pathetic and pitiable it makes you sound. I'm sure that in real life things can't be that bad for you. If I'm being charitable I'd say you willfully misunderstood my post to score a point and have a cheap laugh.

Keyone I agree with you. A site can be cool and s**t at the same time. The important thing is to understand what is cool and/or s**t about a site so that you may learn from it.

Rather than getting hung up on the coolness of Ms Dewey, this thread would be far more interesting if we were discussing the site itself and its strengths and weaknesses.
