Always Twirling Toward Freedom
Thought I'd let you know. We just got a brand new JVC D-ILA (JVC's new technology) in today and let me tell you first hand, the picture is awful. After messing around all morning I finally got it up to par with bugs life and some picture settings adjustments. I took the cable tv cord right out of it, because its unbearable.

this with digital input, or analog?
and it's not Lowe... it's Loewe. German origin.

D-ILA is a totally new technology? Or is that just JVC's re-branding of something else?

Component. But seeing it side by side with the dlp, no compairison. D-ILA is something new JVC just put out. I'm going to read up on it a bit to see how it works.

pooon... I think this is why you've never seen one in action.
Intel is now delaying the launch of the chips used in the TVs until they can work out a few bugs and get the price down a little more. We probably won’t see the first LCoS TVs until sometime next year now.
Intel is delaying everything as of late. bleh.

Just doing a follow up. Did you ever find a tv?

Thats a shame.
We just got some new tvs in, thought I'd let you in on it.
LG Projection LCD. Sucks. The colors are faded and we got a dead pixel after only 1 week.
LG DLP isn't terrible, but not recommended. The colors are too high contrast, and if we turn down the contrast, its too washed. There seems to be no intermedium.
That JVC D-ILA I was talking about in an earlier post got a lot better. Don't know if it just needed sometime to warm up or what but as of now, its one of the better pictures I've seen. But it still has image burn and is more expensive than DLP.
We got the new lineup of Samsung DLP's coming in soon.

I talked my friend's boyfriend out of an LCD flat panel, into the Samsung DLP. (HLP series, but not on the pedestal.) He went a little nuts and bought the 50" one.
It's absolutley stunning in action at home. I didn't realize it had HDMI, and a regular 15-pin monitor input. Definitely the way to go. Now if only there was hockey to watch, I'd get one.
One thing I'm not sure about, the cable installer hooked it up for him (they had to get a different cable box.) The guy used the component connections instead of DVI, shouldn't he have at least used the DVI if the cable box didn't have HDMI? (Cheaper cables probably.)
As far as D-ILA, it's proprietary, and that makes me wary.
And yeah pooon, I wasn't impressed with the LG stuff either. Mitsubishi has a couple out now, my hopes aren't high.

Well, that took effing long enough, didn't it?
What does anyone know about the 360 upscaling DVD's? Right now it'll only output 480p in DVD mode.

@PAlexC - If you want to see this brand, go to Stereo Exchange on Broadway (a few blocks north of Houston). I was not impressed.
No offense Gerbs, but in person, not very impressive pictures. Designs were bad too.
@DLP fanboys...every single tv tech out there has it's issues. With DLP, you get rainbow effect, you get bad vertical view issues, and size (depth of 10 inches or more) issues, not to mention rapidly degrading bulbs due to oversaturated factory settings. I have a friend that has one in his basement (no ambient light whatsoever) directly in front of a couch and loves it. In the living room (lots of ambient light), a 46 inch LCD on the wall -- he loves this one too.
@PAlexC (again) - just make sure that whatever you are getting is the right one for the majority of the tasks/locations you will be using it in. At this point, after 2+ years of consumer research you are probably more informed than anyone else with comments in this thread. I am interested in hearing the (final!) outcome...

I've done the HDMI/Component test. To my untrained "consumer level" eyes, I saw no difference. I can't speak to DVI though, but can't imagine it would be any better than HDMI.

I slacked off for awhile. Came to a cost / need analysis and the Sharp without the 1080p was fine, it just wasn't worth another 4-500 bucks for me. Great contrast ratio, great color, better anti-aliasing than the no-name brands. Plus, I got to haggle at PC Richard and saved like $300. (Never be too over-eager as a salesman.) Not too many manufacturers had 37"ers, and frankly I just came to a point where I had to buy it if I was ever going to, been TV-less for 7 months, which isn't an awful thing, but I kinda just wanted one and needed to make a choice.

If you don't need 1080p, have you looked at the new 8th generation Pioneer plasmas? From what I hear it's probably the best TV out in the US right now.

Most plasmas don't come in 37...and frankly, I wanted to keep the cost within reason, given the amount of TV I actually watch.

Ah ok, 42" is the smallest one. My next one will be 60" or more ... I really can't go smaller than my current one, right?
Anyway, that will be years away, so get on with your "small" stuff.

None taken. I went with an ugly ass ViewSonic LCD... but loving it.
And got it for a friggin' steal. 37" for pennies.

nice move...the prices on these things move so fast...my feeling was to buy what I could afford when I bought...eventually, I'd replace it with a larger, newer model and move the 32 inch panasonic to the bedroom (or the bar room, when I have one!)

I got myself a cheap Toshiba Regza 32" 1080i. $899 (last year). Its a good intermedite tv until I move up to a 37 or 42 with 1080p. I use it as a pc monitor as well, which is great, except it refuses an resolutions beyond 1024X768 .
Buddy of mine just got a sharp aquos with 1080p. Beautiful picture.

The upscaling isn't that great. I've got my 360 and my PC hooked up to my TV. In a direct comparison, the 360 looks like garbage.

HDMI is the successor the DVI. Frankly there isn't a huge difference in the lot unless you're running 50+ inches, and even then it arguable. The main purpose of HDMI is it's digital, so now they can impose DRM.
Also, HDMI carries audio, unlike the other two.
