    Exercise: No Viewfinder

I'm trying to get a better handle on composition, so I'm following some photography exercises. Anyone want to try as well?

Exercise 1: Take pictures without looking into the viewfinder.

    Here's two of mine.

How does not looking in the viewfinder help you with composition?

    I like the shots!

It's a first step to getting to know the camera. The idea is that you have to visualize how the shot will look from a different viewpoint than what you are seeing.

So, you put the camera on the ground or up high, or some odd angle and imagine what the image will be. Take the picture and compare.

Seems a bit silly. The viewfinder is there for a reason.

yasu, i'm with you on this

i decided to try this at an outdoor party a few months back. I was holding a beer and didn't want to seem intrusive to people who probably didn't want a camera in their face, so i slung the camera around my shoulder and tipped the camera up from hip or belly high. I was pretty happy with the results....

    these are off my photoblog:

Don't get me wrong. I do voyeurisms shots too when no one is looking. But I don't study how I aimed them to get better composition...
