Golf Clubs
I got into golf a bit last summer, but played mostly borrowing sets from generous friends. I haven't gotten to play at all this year, until this weekend when I'm in a scramble. I really should get a set of clubs.
What's a good starter set that won't break the bank?
I've used some expensive irons in the past, with big heavy heads, and I tend to way over kill the ball with a pitching wedge with those, so I don't want anything too hardcore.

did you hit up your local craigslist yet? I just did a quick search in my area and found tons of used sets. Might be better off doing that than buying one of those cheap starter sets at Dicks which you'll grow out of in a year.
otherwise, i have a complete set from Dicks that i believe was around $200. Bag, all teh clubs, drivers, putter. I'm slowing replacing the set a club at a time. It's not the greatest set, but i'll do in a pinch.

actually....I have a set of clubs that I picked up about 8 years ago from a pawn shop for like $100 I think. Some of them are pretty nice. I used them twice at a chip & putt and they've been sitting in my garage ever since, I realized how much a hate golf. You can have them if you want. I can bring them with the next time I go to my parents in NJ if you want to meet somewhere. Unless of course you need them like tomorrow. I see my parent about once every other month and I'm not due for another month or so.

I ran out and bought a starter set for under $300. I can replace clubs as I go, but if you want to let me know what those other ones are, I might be interested.

I bought a cheap set of clubs... from sportchek. a friend of mine who worked there got me a whole set for 200$. Whatever u do, dont rent out clubs from the driving range... they're almost always pretty crap. Dont spend money on a bag or fancy golf clothes neither... especially if ur just getting started
I honestly suck at golf but go to the driving range with my buddies a lot just for fun.

Golf clubs depreciate worse than even cars. The seconds you strike a ball, they are worth half of what you paid for them. Used clubs are always a good bet, as most golf junkies insist on having the latest and greatest equipment (thinking their game will be better as a result). Let the junkies keep up with the joneses. Check Craigslist...check your local pro shop. Many times they will have demo sets or sets returned in exchange for a newer set. I have a set of Titleist DCI irons that were barely used when I got them, but I was able to save about 70-80% off of retail at the time. Some clubs you dont want used, like a driver, as it loses spring after a while, but without question...a used set of nice irons will keep you and your wallet very happy.

Yeah, I was going to go the used route. There's an awesome store near here for that, but they're closed temporarily.
I picked up these last night:

But I may return them for these:

Yeah - these all in one packaged deals usually skimp a lot. For a little more money, I'd advise getting a higher grade used iron set...perhaps one decent wood (3 wood or utility wood), a sand wedge and a putter. The putter is key -- you'll use this club more than any other in your bag. If you are truly a beginner, use of your driver should be infrequent, if at all. Better to be 150 yds in the fairway than 200 yds in the next county. Get used to hitting your medium length irons and practice the sh*t out of your putting. Nothing will make your scores go down faster. The rest will come with time.

My putting, fortunately, isn't atrocious. At least not as bad as my friends who have played longer.
I was thinking of exchanging those el-cheapo ones for these:
