Can Flash can get directions from PHP/HTML?

Hi,

I know you can interact with external files with Flash, but can flash receive directions from HTML or PHP. I would guess yes, but I am a bit lost.

I need to build a .swf that will loads different XML images, and that will go to different frames when a user clicks on (HTML or PHP) the page links where the .swf will be.
Client wants the outside file html so its search engine friendly, but the .swf need to get directions from the HTML. Is this at all possible? I am only going to code the flash side, but would like to give some directions to the programmer.
