[WIP] Currency Snake (aka Crown Snake 2)

Hi! Some of you may remember, though most probably don't, a game called Crown Snake. Crown Snake is still playable at http://crownproductions.com/snake. For those of you that recall, I had begun working on a second version of the game.

To make a long story short, things came up that detracted my attention from Snake 2, but I have gotten back to it and have every intention of turning it into an extremely fun game. I believe it's off to a good start as I've released the beta version of, as it's now called, Currency Snake.

Check it out at http://trashtalkthedollar.com/snake.php. I am anxious to hear what you all have to say on it

    Hey, I remember you!

    Interesting game you've got there.
The concept is quite strange; I've never played a simple game like Snake that aspires to be a game about world currency!
To be honest, I think it's trying to be something it's not. Snakes don't eat money. I can see why you'd want this kind of aim (because it introduces a different scoring system, right?) but couldn't you just make it so that it had to collect bugs of different types (fatter bugs == more points)? I guess it's too late to change anything now, but maybe keep in mind for your next game to stick to a theme and gamestyle that work togethor.
Also, the music, though it engages the player well, does not suit at all. It's really the exact opposite of what I'd use for snake, to be honest.
I think you also need to re-think the presentation of the money/food. I was confused with what part is actually hittable. I now know that it's the very centre tile, but perhaps represnt this better graphically.
Finally, I got $0 from one of the money/food things. Make a minimum vlue of $1 or something.

Now that I've finished bagging it I can get onto some praising.
I like it how you've got a different scoring system. It works well, and makes the player prioritise where to go.
The minimap helps a lot, so good work there.
The ability to use the mouse, though I found it a LOT harder than just using the keyboard, was quite intuitive imo.

    Good luck with your game.

    Viza.

Hey Viza! Funny you're the first to respond, lol. I still have that quote in my signature from a while back that you made.

I really appreciate the thorough response! Seems we're both on a very similar wavelength. In terms of the money idea, I actually have much bigger plans for that point system. It's an integral theme within the website that I'm going to be using to much more effect. As for the presentation, I totally agree with your comment and I had a feeling that would be the first thing critiqued by the folks here at FlashKit. My idea is to display it as the symbol rather than the 3 letter abbreviation and that will be implemented within the next day or so. As for the $0 point currency, that is the Japanese Yen, which, as you know has a terrible JPY > USD exchange rate and its $0 award comes from successive rounding. This will be corrected very soon, I assure you.

Thanks for the praises too Also, how do you all feel about the head-centered movement? I've never seen this done with snake, and while I enjoy it a great deal, I'd like to know how other people feel about it.

Again, I greatly appreciate your thorough response! I went ahead and tested your "Bounce" game. Wonderful concept! It is terribly addicting and very fun to play Great job!

I hope to hear from some others soon!

I've implemented quite a few changes to the game thus far. Points are now displayed using the currency symbol instead of abbreviation. Currency values are now calculated MUCH more accurately (down to the penny). I've enabled the grid, which I think adds a very nice look to the game in addition to helping judge where you are relative to a point.

I've also developed a leaderboard for the game! It is in perfect working order, I hope.

I'm anxious to hear your responses on this and to see if anyone can topple my high score

    - good ideas on the controls (mouse, wasd,←↑↓→)
    - no graphics
    - submit score error message gets on my nerves,- just want to restart as fast as possible (like hitting space just once and restart!)
    - arial font,- better find something else

your first game was better even though very technical (not artistic or very creative)
