The thing that REAALY tries my patience and causes me to not play flash games at all is the ****ing mochiads taking over the web. Now they are un-skippable videos resembling TV commercials, rather than 5 second long MMORPG commercials (I hate mmorpg games too).
That's it, I'm fed up with having my barely-legal signatures criticized.

Really? Videos? How much do developers get out of that? They are making bank (mochiads is). I actually don't hate things like that, I appreciate the beauty. Creativity. Monopolisticality. I should get that word coined.... monopolisticalitarianisticality. Antimonopolisticality.
Anyways, Glad to see this thread lasted this long. I didn't know how many felt near as much as me. I haven't played a flash game in like 2 months, other than you guys' games.

Hype over content...
"Flash games do feel more disposable in some way."
I think that's partly the reason you mentioned about them not sitting in a custom page.
You can't really lose yourself in the moment when there's a chat going on to the right of your game or ads that are designed to grab your attention on the same page.
Another reason is budgets. There is a ceiling on the value of Flash games ( Like all games ) where it means that after a certain point it becomes counter productive to work on the game any more, that the author will be eating into their own profit margin. Now if that budget is say $10k, it's very hard for a game in that price range to compete with a lot of the higher end casual games, where the budget starts at $100k.
Yet another factor is the sheer volume of Flash games. There must be as many Flash games available to play online now as there are different types of advert online.
By default the value of the games go down just under the weight of their own numbers.
"causes me to not play flash games at all is the ****ing mochiads taking over the web"
So you begrudge authors getting paid for their work 'cause you have to watch a 5 second ad whilst the game is loading anyway ?
I'm not a huge lover of ads in games, but the alternative is that is goes back to the pre-ad days where all the money is made on the distribution end, ie the portals, rather than for the creative team behind the content.
Which is kinda wrong.
Squize.

I can stand them, it just better be a good game!

I'd understand it if you said you didn't like playing Rented games because you might need to return them before you're done playing them. But flash? There's no timelimit and you just need an internet connection to play them. Just ignore the crappy games and play the good ones!

That's one of the very little means Flash game developers get to make any money so you better get used to it. Someone spent months on a game and you can play it for free.

Fine, but it still annoys me in a general sense (and plus it's waay more than 5 seconds now, and invariably for a detergent. Why would someone who likes flash games be turned on to a product being endorsed at their waiting expense?).
That's it, I'm fed up with having my barely-legal signatures criticized.

I don't get the whole flaming of ads in Flash games. Would it be much more entertaining to look at a preloader? Nowadays it takes more then five seconds to load, and you're complaining about the ads they show in the meantime. Sounds you've got a problem with loadtimes instead.
I actually tend to finish a Flash game at one go, if I like it. Flash games usually don't have that much levels, so it's enough for me to say to myself: "just a few more, you've almost finished it". It's just that there's so much out there, it's hard to find those games.
I don't find it annoying to have a flash game sitting on a page with some stuff going on around it. Flash developers (generalizing here) know that their games are going to sit on a portal with other stuff happening around it and make a light game. So the games that sit on those pages are designed to be there. They're snacks for crying out loud.

Playing other games for inspiration can be a double edged sword sometimes. Most games are mashups of several mechanics taken from other games. So in that way, playing other games a lot can be invaluable.
Other times I find I get stuck on 1 game TOO much, where trying to capture the feel of a game turns into mimicing it. Like right now I am trying to come up with a new dice mechanic for a board game, but I keep waffling back and forth between two existing mechanics from other games. I don't want to copy either one, and taking one and modifying it slightly makes me feel dirty. I would rather come up with something new, but I can't get those existing ideas out of my head now. Like trying to think of the name of one song when another song is stuck in your head.

I feel a lot like TOdorus. Ads usually simply replace the load times of games. Same way I don't find it annoying for a game to sit on a generic portal page. If it really is a good game, I'll zone out of the page, and be all into the game ; if it really is a good game, it really shouldn't matter on what sort of page it's sitting on...But of course a suited page helps the user zone into the game a lot quicker...
Anywho, I don't think there's anything wrong with ads, and games sitting on portal pages, though their own custom ones help...

I don`t mind waiting for the game, if the game is really good. Well waiting to play free games is no big deal, the developer should get some credit of making the game for us.I don`t no about the rest of you guys but waiting for 30 odd seconds is no big deal.

Now tell me whos watchin......
major bump, but yeah i'm sure we all appreciate a comment like that. There are people that hate that stuff, but that stuff is the only reason its free.
that stuff = ads...
