[OT] Unity now free to indies.

Unity has dropped their already low fee for an indie license, to $0.

Finally you can stop wishing for Papervision to become faster and just do 3D the right way. ;-)

Yup, that is really big news, this can quickly have a huge impact quickly.

Regarding what you said on papervision: Yup, totally. The future of papervision isn´t clear anyway because one of the core lead developers has quit the project and another one is meanwhile working with unity3d,so..

They also announced $5.5 million in investment and have moved the company HQ to San Fransisco. Anyone who thought they could be on shakey ground can relax now. They should be around at least a few more years.

    yeah, totally
When one looks at the job listings pages one can also see that they are working on other nice things like ps3 support.

For those who are interested in iphone dev i´ve compared flash to iPhone and unity iPhone a bit in this thread: http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=33506&start=75
Note that flash to iPhone is still in private alpha so i only listed what is public knowledge up to now and this could still change until release.

This is the biggest news of the year for me.....I've been wanting to try unity for such a long time.

I hope flashkit will soon start a section for unity devs!

I thought some about whether it would make sense to have a unity section on flashkit but came to the conclusion that unity has really good forums so the majority who is interested in it enough to talk about it regularly would probably go there.
If its a popular request to have a unity forum here though i could bring it up among the moderators.

I don't think we need an entire section of the forum, but It would ba a nice addition to this games section. There are a lot of us who are already using unity3d, and a lot more, who would like to use it....if we can all come together and discuss in a familiar environment.....I think the entire thing would be really simple and nice!

    Please do it
It could be a sub section of the games forum

Now the only thing that the world is missing is microtransactions for unity games

Wow, unity also released a free tutorial set for 3rd person platformer, along with full resources and everything. Now learning it is even easier.....I already bought the unity3d essentials book which was really well written( it had first person shooter tutorial), and now this.....
unity is really doing a great job in expanding it's userbase, Adobe should learn from them!

Question, can I model and animate things within Unity or do I have to use another/other program(s) to do that? I've been looking around and I can only find how to import stuff into Unity with 3D Max or Maya or whatever.

Unity allows to create primitive 3d shapes like cubes, spheres, planes etc and it also has some support for doing animations a bit timeline based all in the ide.
Then one can also procedurally generate and animate 3d objects.
But besides all that, if you want to do complex shaped 3d models which are rigged and have various animation states with keyframes etc you´re usually way better of to do em in a 3d app and then import the model into unity.
Unity supports importing various formats so there is a bunch of apps that can be used to create models.

I should also add to this that unity has a way better setup for assets than the flash ide has right now, basically all project assets are inside a folder and anything that is changed/updated/added/deleted in that folder also gets automatically reimported/updated in your project.
This is a big timesaver because one can open a 2D or 3D graphics editing app for example, do the modifications one wants to, save the file, switch back to unity and bam ones sees the updated thing right in place there right away.
This is very handy for editing textures or 3d models etc and makes it much more fun to edit and update assets with external tools than lets say with the flash ide.

guys, is there any resource for us flash devs to move to unity3d? I mean something that points out the basic rules, and similaraties/dissimilarities to keep in mind while moving from as3? Cause what I saw, their "javascript", isn't exactly javascript....it's just syntactically similar. Though the basic programming concepts are the same, I am having a hard time dissecting the tutorial code( which basically is drag this here, and you have your game), and figuring out the things I need....like how to write and manage the main game loop, how to get info from the colliders,....e.t.c
