I think there is something to be scared of on dec 21 , 2012. Its dec 22, 2012 , they day when all of the sensationalists realize they are complete morons , and get disgruntled because they sold their house and moved their families into a dirty hole in the earth.

Facts : Mayan Long counts have ended before , and will end again. The first time i counted to 10 the world didn't end the next time i counted to ten.

Facts : The interpretation of their calender is exactly that. An interpretation . There is one solid piece of evidence , an enscribed tablet of sorts , that is our sole base for understanding any of their time keeping systems.

Facts : Polar reversal is possible , but it cannot , and will not happen in a day. It takes thousands of years.

Facts : Global warming is occuring , and will continue to occur , and then global cooling will happen , and then it will get cold , then it will probably get warmer again , and water will come. Holy crap ! this process takes millions of years.

Facts : They are meteors , asteroids , bodies in space that have orbital patterns intersecting with earth. This is inevitable , but none are scheduled to come anywere near us for at least a 100 hundred years.

The only real threat as I see it , is the mass hysteria brought on by all this televised , nostrodamus garbage. People will give significance to even the most insignificant events.

The long count hasn't ended really... but it's just a cycle nonetheless. The long count reached back 22k or so years, ending it's long count in 2012. It's just a restart.

Polar reversal is happening now as we speak. Too much scientific evidence to back that up. The fact that magnetic north is somewhere in Siberia, if not further south occasionally.

Anyway, the Mayans were right... things go in cycles. Earth goes in cycles in regards to it's position with the stars, blah blah.

The rest of the stuff... heh. Let's see. I'll be having fun on that day.

It is too bad, but there is no law against lying on the Internet or anywhere else except in a court of law. As far as the safety of the Earth is concerned, the important threats are from global warming and loss of biological diversity, and perhaps someday from collision with an asteroid or comet, not the pseudoscientific claims about 2012.

Whats crazy is that there are networks , lots of networks , history channel, discovery channel , a & e , syfy , etc , etc that inject this poison constantly. I don't think a night has gone by in the last 3 months that i haven't seen some show on tv about this. And whats worse , is you get these people that happen to catch 5 minutes of one of these shows , and all of a sudden they're experts on the subject of apocalypse. But few if any actually do any sort of homework, and look up "where" these facts originate. What these channels do a great job of is rounding up a handful of scientists , some credible , some not , and film them speculating on everything from jfk assassinations to bigfoot , and then with some creative editing make it seem like the entire science loving world believes that for absolutely no founded reason , the entire earth is just going to blink of out existence four days before christmas. Its scary how impressionable people can be.

Ever. That's my question. From the Chandler Wobble which differs in amplitude to geomagnetic reversal, it's happened in the past.

I don't know where in the hell you're getting rotation reversal though. That's never been brought up in this conversation until you decided to bring it up. I don't believe that's even an option, nor has ever happened. Or could.

Yes it flipped and more than once. If I remember right, its possible to have more then one north and south pole as well.

Tesla study's are really interesting on dynamo force, wave and magnetism.

Beyond that, the Mayan civilization collapse is a good example to not follow. They didn't take care of the future and were caught by the very own nature that they tried to predict.

I refuse to go beyond the 2012 stuff as mere wishful thinking. Sure, I love the stuff to death, even able to go into conversations about 2012 with the odd concept that it's something that's based off some serious math that people figured out by merely looking at the stars.

The whole forthcoming apocalypse mentality... sure. Y2k, the anti-Christ, the upcoming deluge, the past deluges, the Rapture... ever thought humans are just that damn destructive we're going to all kill ourselves if it was said we're going to do so or not?

Regardless, I do believe in cycles. I do believe that an ending is probably coming. I do believe that the Mayans figured out the earth's rotation, the calendar, the procession between the stars/constellations before a lot of other civilizations.

December 2012 will come and go. And I'll party like it's 1999 on January 1st, 2013.

Okay , if you read that article , i can see why it went unnoticed. it was approximately 7 meters in size . That's like 20 feet. That is not at all apocalyptic in nature. Something that small in space is probably extremely difficulty to pin point. We would need something about the size of 4 or 5 football fields , with an dense, probably iron composition , to hit the earth to do any remarkable damage. And probably something the size of a small city to end the world. And something that large can be tracked , and is almost certainly being tracked.

There is a limit to how well we can track things in the solar system. The solar system is full of asteroids "the size of small cities" (that is, a kilometer or more across), but they usually orbit in the asteroid belt between earth and Mars, or at the outer edge of the solar system (the Kuiper belt). If a smaller asteroid or comet hit one, it would alter it's course, and it might come straight to earth. Since it's not a periodic thing, unlike comets, it would be impossible to track it for very long. Asteroids hit planets all the time, and many of them come as a surprise to scientists. If we did discover one, heading for earth, then we would probably not have very long, only a few days or weeks.

A small asteroid hits earth without anyone noticing and the US air force simulated what would happen if we had a 3 day warning.

I'm not saying I believe the earth will explode or get hit by an asteroid in 2012, I'm just saying that an asteroid hitting us is a very likely scenario, and we wouldn't have very long to prepare ourselves.
