but doesnt time slow down the closer you get to the speed of light?
i remember reading somewhere the theory that the best way to handle accidentally flying into the pull of a black hole is to point your space ship towards the center and put it on cruise control, it would take an infinite amount of time to slowly be eaten.

Yup you are right.
If you can slow down the time at one place than you can start to receive message from the future from there. Since the time is close to the present but still in the near future and can be the same time in a future even further.
That's what they are trying to do these days... or its already done...

Time will only appear to slow down for everyone who is not moving close to the speed of light. That is, if you look at someone who is standing still, then they will move in slow motion. If the person who stands still is looking at you, they will see you move at slow motion. But you will experience flying into the black hole at normal speed. The best (theoretical) way to survive a black hole is to fly around it in a spiral. The black hole will suck in everything the same way water drains out of a tub, like a maelstrom. The closer you get to the edge of the black hole, the faster things will spin. Apparently, things will move faster than the speed of light here, and you will therefore pop back in time (think superman flying around the earth).

No time really to observe anything interesting that happens on the way.
Think about snappping your fingers ...faster than that thought.

I'm no astrophysicist, but I don't think it would be instant. The black hole would be very small, and so wouldn't be very strong. If it absorbs the entire earth, then it would have a mass of one earth, and would therefore pull on us with one earth gravity, and we would therefore be sucked into it at the same rate as we fall towards earth, ie 9.8m/s/s. A newly created black hole, made from protons and neutrons (or whatever they happen to smash at that time), would be very light, weighing less than a particle of air, and so wouldn't be able to suck in anything further away than a couple of nanometers. You could hold it in your hand and it would be perfectly safe (it might sting a bit, and it will probably stick to your hand, and you can't see it, because it's so small).

thanks for that physics lesson.
I make guesses ...if you relied on me the earth would still be flat.
No longer a Flashkit mod, not even by stealth
Insanity is just a point of view. After all, the world looks pretty normal through your own underpants.

I'm only guessing as well; I was this close to failing physics
But we'll see in a few months/years when they power the thing up to max. Maybe we all die instantly, or we get slowly dragged into a black hole somewhere in Switzerland. I just hope I'm still in Australia when it happens, so I have a few extra hours of living.

It's not!?

Wait wait wait, time slows down or do you just get to go very very fast -- in which case your time ticks away on NORMAL, while others seem to stand still (which for themselves they'll be experiencing their NORMAL time as well) .. right?
... I shouldn't have left Physics class so soon...

^ I heard those are rank.
@ihoss, I think there are a lot of factors you're leaving out. I never even took physics but have learned enough about forces and gravity is relatively weak and easily overcome. Concepts of speed and time disappear in the presence of such energy exchanges.

That is true, which is why a small black hole (which sucks you in using gravity) isn't a big deal. The magnets that make up the LHC are going to exert a larger force than any man made black hole.

Time is affected by gravity (and acceleration) and speed, not energy. AFAIK (pop-science knowledge and wikipedia reading) those concepts behave as we would expect no matter how large the acceleration or speed gets (which is why they can predict what happens to a black hole.

That is pure crap. Sorry to be so harsh, but that "documentary" is completely wrong. They claim so many things that are just not true, so much stuff that is pseudo science and the rest is their misunderstanding of popular science. If you want to learn something, then don't watch that documentary.

Been a while since I saw that doc ihoss. I actually thought it was a different one that gets deep into M theory. And yah, it is pretty lame.
